		Tacchini, in qualità di Presidente, si occupò della redazione delle Memorie della Società, che vennero pubblicate a partire dal 1872.
		Com'era ovvio, Hale non trascurò di rendere visita a Tacchini a Roma; certamente i due discussero del progetto che da tempo Hale aveva in mente: fondare una rivista scientifica internazionale interamente dedicata all'astrofisica.
		Con la morte di Tacchini, nel 1905, The Astrophysical Journal perdeva uno dei suoi fondatori e sostenitori il cui contributo, che é forse uno degli aspetti meno conosciuti della personalità dello scienziato italiano, non mancò di essere riconosciuto ed apprezzato all'epoca[459].

		In particolare, Tacchini aveva compreso che l'astronomia stava cambiando: nuove applicazioni della fisica all'astronomia stavano dando risultati interessanti; valeva forse la pena di dirigersi con decisione verso le nuove frontiere della ricerca astronomica.
		Tacchini pensò bene dunque di dedicarsi con esso allo studio del sole, osservando facole e macchie solari, ed intervenendo nel dibattito scientifico internazionale sulla natura e struttura della fotosfera solare.
		Nei programmi di Tacchini, la cui figura assumerà col tempo una sempre maggiore rilevanza politica e scientifica, l'Osservatorio di Catania avrebbe dovuto probabilmente rimpiazzare, almeno per le ricerche di astrofisica, quello di Palermo, che si vide quindi sempre più a corto di finanziamenti.

		Due to his influence, the Bellini Observatory was completed on Mount Etna where Pietro believed that the high altitude would improve the spectroscopic observations of the Sun, and potentially allow direct observations of the solar corona without an eclipse.
		Tacchini crater on the Moon is named for him.

		Tacchini diede impulso, oltre che agli studi di meteorologia e astronomia, anche agli studi geodinamici e, sotto la sua direzione, a seguito del disastroso terremoto di Casamicciola, nel 1883, si costituì la Commissione di Geodinamica di cui de Rossi fu chiamato a far parte.
		Nel 1891 Tacchini fece un sopralluogo a Siena, e chiese una sovvenzione di 600 lire per la sistemazione della stazione geodinamica del II ordine di Siena, che all'epoca era diretta dal prof.
		Pietro Tacchini, direttore dell'Ufficio Centrale di Meteorologia e Geodinamica, gli inviò tutti gli strumenti per installare una stazione termo-udometrica.

		The observatory had in its possession, from the end of the previous century, a telescope by Steinheil with a 162 mm aperture and focal length of 260 cm [file 48], provisionally installed on a wooden frame by Tacchini who had used it to observe the transit of Venus across the solar disc in India.

		Su consiglio dell'astronomo di Brera Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli, fu deciso di inviare a Palermo in qualità di Astronomo Aggiunto, ma in realtà di vero direttore, il giovanissimo ma promettente astronomo modenese Pietro Tacchini.

		Peter Abrahams reports that G.L. Tupman observed the first contact of the transit of 1874 as a member of the British expedition to Hawaii using a spectroscope set up to observe prominences.
		He also reports that Pietro Tacchini of Palermo Observatory observed the 1874 transit from Muddapur, India using a spectroscope with a wide slit before second contact.
		The spectrohelioscope, Lyot filter, interference filter or Fabry-Perot etalon (all modern methods of observing the Sun in H-alpha light) had not yet been invented in 1882.

		We ate there 19 years ago on our honeymoon and just have wonderful memories of it..would like to surprise my husband with a trip back there if it still exists...D
