	Solomon Islands Pijin - History
		Pijin assisted in the communication of the ideas of Maasina Rule (Bennett 1979), but also in forging the unity of the movement: linguistic barriers were broken down, and the notion of group identity gradually incorporated the wider notion of brotherhood.
		Pijin is not only the medium of communication of urban life, it is the medium of a type of culture that is different in many respects from the cultural world of the plantations, and from those of the villages.
		In Honiara, the strong position of Pijin is reinforced by the very high degree of language diversity we find in town (most of the 64 vernaculars of the country are represented in Honiara).

	A NOTE ON PACIFIC PIDGIN ENGLISH (PPE)
		Its successor languages are the four ‘Bislamic Pidgins’: Bislama (Vanuatu), Pijin (Solomon Islands), Tok Pisin (Papua New Guinea), and Torres Strait Creole (islands of Torres Strait and islander communities at the tip of Cape York, Australia).
		This in turn means that the primary lexicon of Bislama, Pijin, Tok Pisin, and Torres Strait Creole should be considered to have come in the first instance, not from English, but from Pacific Pidgin English.
		The addition of Torres Strait Creole to new discussions may be quite helpful here, because of the arguably early separation of TSC from the other pidgins, 1864-1890, and the lack of connection between TSC and the melting pot of the plantations, whether in Queensland, Samoa or elsewhere.

	The Pidgins and Creoles in Education (PACE) Newsletter
		Jourdan (1990) points out that “despite the fact that Pijin is the most widely spread language of the archipelago, and certainly the main language of the urban centres, it is not recognized as being an asset in the education process” (p.169).
		The first attempt to use Pijin as a medium for teaching literacy was the Pijin Literacy Project, coordinated by the Solomon Islands Christian Association (SICA) beginning in 1978.
		They have been teaching initial literacy in Pijin to women for a number of years and also have trained students to teach reading and writing skills when they return to their villages.
