Pik Botha was born on 27 April 1932 in Rustenburg, Transvaal.His father was a school principal.
Pik as he is affectionately known attended the Hoer Volkskool, Potchefstroom, and was a good all-round pupil, becoming chairman of debating society, head of the Voortrekkers, a member of the rugby team, an officer in the school cadets, and was top of his class.
Botha was appointed Law Adviser of the Department of Foreign Affairs in February 1966, and between 1966 and 1974 attended seven sessions of the United Nations General Assembly as a member of the South African delegation.

Botha is attending the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's amnesty committee hearings in Pretoria where eight former policemen, including former police commissioner General Johann Coetzee and apartheid spy Craig Williamson, are applying for amnesty for the London bombing in March 1982.
PW Botha's lawyer, Ernst Penzhorn, who is at the proceedings, suggested to Coetzee that Botha had not sanctioned the bombing and that Le Grange as a minister of government had taken t harm the good relations he had with Thatcher's government.
Pik Botha may be called to give evidence at the hearing next week in connection with alleged foreign affairs involvement in the London boma about allegations that the explosives for the bomb were transported to London by way of the diplomatic bag, and in a civilian aircraft.

Rather I would prefer hearing F W de Klerk and the likes of Pik Botha apologising to the Whites of this country for the role they played in engineering a switch-over of government whereby the new ANC government rapidly replaced "racist apartheid" benefitting the whites with "racist affirmative action" benefitting the fls.
As for the reference to PW Botha as a "lost cause, a dinosaur coddled in senility" -- such a remark can come only from a person who has not seen the latest interviews with PW Botha which are now out in the public domain (under copyright!) via DVD and VHS recordings.
PW Botha displays remarkable clarity of mind and memory and analysis during his two-hour-long interviews in English and Afrikaans -- and it is that which the ANC wishes to keep from the public domain.
