Pikas: Wildlife Notebook Series - Alaska Department of Fish and Game
Pikas form colonies in mountainous terrain, living in old rock slides, talus slopes, or around large boulders, usually with a meadow or patches of vegetation in the vicinity.
Pikas are diurnal, being most active during the morning and late afternoon when their short, shrill bark not only advertises the boundaries of their territory but also warns other colony members of intruders.
Pikas do not hibernate, and their survival during the winter is dependent on the success of their haying season.

 Lennie Rue
Pikas are creatures of the talus slopes; they always live in the jumble of rocks that have been split off from the mountain peaks by frost action and expansion and contraction of exposure.
The pikas live in colonies and, where you find one, you may find a dozen more, although they will be widely scattered across the slopes because each animal does have a small territory it claims as its own.
And, although the pikas uttering those alarm notes are usually sitting right out in the open, their small size and the fact that their coloration matches the rocks on which they are sitting makes them extremely hard to locate.

Global warming may be affecting American pika :: The Daily Herald, Provo Utah   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
American pika communities are vanishing from mountains, likely because of global warming, according to a new study.
"This is a bit disconcerting because pika have lived in these talus slopes for hundreds of years, and suddenly we are seeing a 30 to 40 percent loss of the species with no change in the habitat," he said.
American pika are active during the day throughout the year, but may remain under cover during hot days.

Pikas, tiny, short-eared relatives of rabbits, live at high elevations throughout the Western states.
Hikers who frequent rocky mountain slopes are familiar with their high-pitched calls, and with the imposing "hay-piles" the animals construct; since pikas do not hibernate, they use the piles as a winter food supply, and perhaps for protection from the cold.
Nonetheless, the pika provides a stark look at what is possible: A warming climate threatens to sweep the species right off the map.
