The pike species are native to the Palearctic and Nearctic ecozones, ranging across northern North America and from Western Europe to Siberia in Eurasia.
Pikes can grow to a maximum recorded length of 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in), reaching a maximum recorded weight of 35 kg (77 lb).
The pikes are not to be confused with the unrelated pikeminnows (formerly known as "squawfish") of genus Ptychocheilus (family Cyprinidae).

Pike is a common family name, particularly among English-speaking populations.
In Newfoundland, Pike is especially common, ranking 22nd among all surnames there (based on the 1955 voters list, as reported by E.R.Seary in "Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland").
This phenomenon is in fact being observed by the Pike Surname DNA Project, which is using genetic testing to assist with Pike family genealogies.

 NORTHERN PIKE
The northern pike is easily distinguished from the muskellunge by its bean-shaped markings, rounded fins and scales that cover the whole cheek and the upper half of the operculum (gill cover).
Northern pike are popular with anglers because they put up a good fight and are relatively easy to catch - and each year, about 50% of the northern pike population present at the beginning of the season will wind up on the end of a hook.
Wisconsin's record northern pike was a 38-pounder hooked in Lake Puckaway in 1952; the national record is held by a 46-pound northern pike caught in a New York reservoir in 1940.

Pike are among the most aggressive freshwater fish species available to anglers, readily striking both artificial lures and live bait.
Northern pike can be distinguished from their cousins, the pickerels, by the scaleless lower half of the gill covers.

The grass pickerel and redfin pickerel (the two are closely related subspecies), the chain pickerel, the northern pike and the muskellunge are native to North America and to Pennsylvania.
The native pike family residents of Pennsylvania range from the small redfin pickerel of eastern Pennsylvania and its close cousin the grass pickerel of northwestern Pennsylvania, which seldom reach one foot in length, to the mighty muskellunge, whose state angling record is over 54 pounds.
Pike are top-level predators in their habitat, living solitarily and feeding on other fish, plus any birds, small mammals, snakes and frogs that happen into the water.

Pike was to provide an escort for some Osage Indians who had been held as hostages by the Pottawatamies, and take them back to their home villages; negotiate a peace settlement between the Kansas and Pawnee tribes; and attempt to make contact with the Comanche people on the high plains.
Pike was also to explore the headwaters of the Arkansas River, then to proceed south, locate the source of the Red River, and descend it to the Mississippi.

An uncommon variant called the silver pike is dark silver or greenish gray, rather like the "clear" coloration of the muskie; yet it is a northern pike and has the northern pike's scale and pore pattern.

Fort Pike is the first of the Third System fortifications, a group of brick and masonry structures built between 1816 and 1867.
During the Seminole Wars in the 1830s, Fort Pike served as a staging area for many troops en route to Florida, and also as a collection point for hundreds of Seminole prisoners and their fl slaves who were being transported to Oklahoma.
Fort Pike was again left to the care of an ordnance sergeant from 1871 until it was officially abandoned in 1890.

Pike was started in Mauritius and finished (version 1.0) in Thailand, but the bulk of it was written in Madagascar (Mostly Antananarivo and the Southern coast - Ifaty and Toliara - but bits in Ranohira and Isalo National Park).
