The Pike Square was a military tactic developed by the Swiss Confederacy during the 15th century for use by its infantry.
However, the troops were drilled to be able to point their pike in any direction while stationary, with the men in the front of the formation kneeling to allow the men in the center or back to point their pike over their head.
When muskets became common weapons, the pikes were replaced by muskets with bayonets to the same effect.

According to Masonic Grand Commander Albert Pike, "The square...is a natural and appropriate Symbol of this earth...The hermaphroditic figure is the Symbol of the double nature anciently assigned to the Deity, as Generator and Producer, as Brahm and Maya among the Arians, Osiris and Isis among the Egyptians.
