Pikemen were virtually the last infantry force of European regular armies which was equipped with cuirasses.
Pikemen were armed with pikes with a wooden shaft of 5.2-5.8 m (17-19 ft) and swords.
Pikemen were very effective in close fight; early in the 17th century, they were used both in attacks and for defence purposes.

Pike (weapon) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Swiss and Landsknecht pikemen fight at "push of pike" during the Italian Wars.
The decline of the combat column of pikemen was starkly displayed at the terrible Battle of Bicocca in 1522, for instance, where arquebusiers contributed to the heavy defeat of a force of Swiss pikemen.
There are examples of pikemen throwing their weapons down and seizing muskets from fallen comrades, a sign that the pike was on the wane as a weapon.

Instead, pikemen were instructed to step forward and backward, using only their bodies to push the pike forwards while always keeping their left fist secured under their chin with right arm extended to the rear.
It should be noted that pikes work best in deep formations, not wide ones, as when pikemen are in wide formations there is no one in the rear to take their place while they recover.
Likewise, when a few individual pikemen try to flank their opponent's pike block, this also serves no purpose, as they are forced to work individually instead of as a cohesive force, and so should be ignored.

 Tactique
The novelty in the Tercio was the strict cooperation between the pikemen and the gunmen in the same tactical formation.
The pikemen were on the centre (the first row was called the line of the captains) with the two garrisons of harquebusiers.
The pikemen are deployed in 10 ranks excluding the flags and the gunmen in 9 or 3.

An infantry regiment would consist of two types of soldier, Pikemen and Musketeers, along with their Officers, Drummers and of course an Ensign, the officer whose job was to carry the regiment's colours.
Pikemen were the shock troops of the regiment.
Pikemen were often held in reserve while the musketeers weakened the enemy with their firepower.

Tactics - Step 4 - Prepare to Repel Boarders
With the order "Cast loose and provide both" the guns are cast loose, for the service of the gun placed in their proper positions ready for use, small arms brought up from the armory, while the quarter gunner of each division provides waist-belts for cutlasses, bayonets, pistols and battle axes.
At the order "Pikemen over the boarders!" those who are under arms on the poop, with the pikemen, form a line with bayonets, along the deck in rear of the boarders, who keep close down until the order comes to board.
The quarter gunner of the after division is provided with a rattle which he springs when the boarders are called; the sound of a gong calls away the pikemen as in the din of battle-the executive officer, though he has a speaking trumpet might not be distinctly heard.

In the 17th pikemen are still the most numerous on the field initially and the numbers of heavy armoured cavalry is declining rapidly until by the 2nd half the cuiraiss and helmet with perhaps a guantlet is what a horseman wears usually at the most, pikemen continue on, heavy cavalry in very minute numbers.
Pikemen were a minority in all armies before the end of the 16th Century, a larg eminority but a minority nonetheless.
In the 1560's the pike armed regiments of the Swedish army contained 36% pikemen, by the 1580's the few reamining pikearmed unit sonly hade 20% pikemen and by 1600 there was not a single pikeman in the army.

Arms and Armor in the Age of the Musketeer: Overview of 17th Century Tactics
The pikemen and their defense would only be effective if they were extremely disciplined.
However, the musketeers began to outnumber the pikemen as firearm technology and strategic use of firearms improved.
At the beginning of the 17th century, the ratio of pikemen to musketeer was 3 to 1, but as the century progressed, the ratio seemed to even out and in some cases, would reverse to a ratio of 1 to 36.

 myArmoury.com: The Spanish
The first was a decrease in the proportion of pikemen, which fell to 40 percent by the 1580s; the second, the introduction of the musket.
In the 17th Century the proportion of pikemen fell still further, to only 30 or sometimes even 20 percent, but the trend toward the musket, in sharp contrast with developments in other armies, appears to have been somewhat reversed, the proportion of musketeers sometimes being as low as ten percent, and not over 33 percent.
After the early 16th Century, only pikemen, halberdiers, sword-and-buckler men and officers were likely to wear plate armour—a corselet, often with gorget and armour for the shoulders, arms and thighs (at least half the Spanish pikemen were armoured).

Pike (weapon) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This meant that pikemen had to be equipped with a sword for the chaos of melee, although pikemen attempted to avoid such disorganized combat, at which they were at a disadvantage.
In such an environment, pikemen grew to intensely dislike their own weapon, as they were forced to stand inactive as the combat went on around them as the opposing musketeers duelled, feeling that they were mere targets rather than soldiers, and that they were adding nothing to the battle raging around them.
Strangely, the great Hawaiian warrior king Kamehameha I had an elite force of men armed with very long spears who seem to have fought in a manner identical to European pikemen, despite his people's general disposition for individualistic duelling as their method of close combat.

Pikemen should be very vulnerable when on the move - they were, after all, brought back during medieval times as defensive counters against heavy cavalry.
I think pikemen are very usefull in sieges to protect a city entrance for example but when it comes to u being the attacker, having to move quickly to position, well that's a disaster.
The historical tactic of pikemen is mainly in pin down the enemies by spear point, and let the range units behind do all the work (late Medieval tactic).

As one of the backbones of a Landsknecht army, the pikemen wielded 14 to 18 foot long pikes to keep the enemy's heavy cavalry at bay.
The job of a pikeman was to create a hedge of pikes to either protect a position or support a push into the enemy.

Judging by their banners, there were four cohorts of imperial infantry alone, and massed in front of them, at least four cohorts of militia: crossbowmen protected from cavalry assault by ranks of pikemen.
At this, the crossbowmen released their heavy bolts, and when a horseman was hit by one, whether he wore a captured byrnie or not, he fell dead or terribly wounded.
Their ranks fragmented by casualties, the pikemen were at a disadvantage against skilled spearmen.

However, traditionally, other infantry would decimate the pikemen because the polearms they used were too long and unwieldy for melee combat.

In fact all the ordinary pikemen of the first company have hidden themselves among the ranks of the shields (swordsmen), and having left the battle to the swordsmen, who, look with what virtu, security, and leisure, kill the enemy.

Pikemen were the backbone of Renaissance-era armies because of a military "vogue" for the fighting style of the old Greek hoplites among the military leaders of the time.
An army of pikemen took enormous training because an individual pikeman is actually quite weak; it's only through coordinated movement and fighting in formation that pikemen become formidable.
Like certain other archaic units such as crossbows and longbow), pikemen are a dead-end unit line with no final upgrade level.

The mixed group would be more powerful, but the pure pikemen group is cheaper to buy, cheaper to upkeep, and moves faster.

Pikemen is a game that uses Icehouse Pieces and a standard 8x8 board.
Pieces are warriors with long spears known as "Pikes." Each turn a Pikeman may charge in the direction he is pointing (move any number of spaces in a straight line) and then reorient his pike in a different direction, including straight up for defense.
Captured pieces are worth different points depending on their size: 1 for small, 2 for medium, 3 for large.
