The Pilbara has just under 6% of its land area in conservation areas; out of its 16 bioregions 7 are not represented in the conservation estate at all and 10 of the 16 are represented at less than 5% of their area.

Strategic and long term development in the Pilbara is necessary if the state is to have any hope of moving away from its current condition as a city surrounded by empty farmland and mining areas that pay for its high standard of living.
The Pilbara is expected to be a major part of Western Australia's short to medium term economic growth, as downstream mineral processing projects become increasingly viable due to the dergegulated gas market and cheaper energy.
