It is situated in the north west of Western Australia, south of the Kimberley.

Western Australia's state development minister, Mr Clive Brown said: "An aspect of the agreement that sets it apart from previous iron-ore agreements is that it provides for the railway to be subject to the Western Australia Railways Access Act and for open access to port facilities.
It is apparent that the Pilbara region will continue to develop its heavy-haul railways as demand for iron-ore increases far beyond levels thought possible just a decade ago, and as new-found ore deposits continue to be proved highly viable.
