 Album - Pilgrim
This album shows that EC is not just a blues-man, or a rock artist, but a musical genius; not constrained to a particular genre or style, even within the same album.
'Pilgrim' is a polished blues odyssey produced as a result of a fruitful collaboration with co-writer Simon Climie providing his audience with the first album of original material since 'Journeyman' (1989).
'Pilgrim' remains punctuated with Eric's most endearing traits of consummate musicianship and humility, although the impassioned guitar solos of youth are balanced by his maturation as a singer/ songwriter and musician.

The title of this 1998 album is a follow-up to 1989’s Journeyman album.
Pilgrim was Clapton’s first album of all-new studio material since Journeyman.
When the album was initially released, the artwork was withdrawn in several countries (including the US) due to its controversial subject matter of a nude young girl holding a phallic-looking silver airplane / spaceship.

 Album Pilgrim
In the decade between the two albums, he had two new hits -- his moving elegy to his deceased son, "Tears in Heaven," and the slick contemporary soul of the Babyface-written "Change the World" -- and Pilgrim tries to reach a middle ground between these two extremes, balancing tortured lyrics with smooth sonic surfaces.
The deadened sonics would make Pilgrim a chore even if there were strong songs on the record, but only a handful of tunes break through the murk.
Considering that Journeyman, his last album of original material, was a fine workmanlike effort and that From the Cradle and Unplugged crackled with vitality, the blandness of Pilgrim is all the more disappointing.

Well this album may not be in the gritty blues style which people seem to expect, but if anything it is infinitely more original and interesting.
The album is littered with great tracks each with their own special statement, musically and lyrically.
In my opinion, "Pilgrim" is a much more interesting album than the stale, colorless work Clapton churned out in the late 70's and 80's.

Pilgrim is easily Clapton's most ambitious, introspective piece of work since his days with the legendary, lacerating Derek and the Dominos.
Pilgrim is full of big queries -- "How did I get here?/What have I done?" Clapton sings in the opening "My Father's Eyes," a powerful meditation that alludes to both the father Clapton never knew and the son who so tragically died in 1991.
Pilgrim was greeted with decidedly mixed reviews upon its spring 1998 release, but the album debuted at number four and stayed in the Top 10 for several weeks on the success of the single My Father's Eyes.

Clapton remained a prolific artist throughout the Eighties, releasing a live double album that reached #2 (Just One Night), cutting two albums (Behind the Sun and August) with Phil Collins as producer, and launching his own label, Duck Records, in 1983, with one of his stronger studio efforts, Money and Cigarettes.

The Music Box: Eric Clapton - Pilgrim (Album Review)
It does for RandB what his albums in the '70s did for country-rock, essentially by capturing the genre's feel while adding a sound that can only come from Eric Clapton.
Throughout Pilgrim, Clapton's singing is soulful and emotional, with a blues-infused power that seemed to be lacking on, of all things, his blues album From the Cradle.
This time out, it all seems to have come together for him, and this is, without a doubt, his best album in a long, long time.

Yet, while Singh and Sawhney share their roots in the asian underground movement, anyone who has listened to Talvinís two albums, will know that while the man definitely has loads of talent, his albums are uneven works at best.
A fusion of hip hop a la A tribe called Quest (The Pilgrim), traditional mixed with flamenco (Homelands), jazz (Tides) and many more - too many to list here -Sawhney has created an album that may have its roots in the asian underground but in the process goes way beyond it.
Centred around the nuclear tests conducted by India in 1998, the album tells of Sawhneyís struggle to identify with an India he was not born into and an England which he calls home, but is unable to find acceptance in.

I wish the producers would have left the tape rolling for an extended "Three O'Clock Blues" or "Help the Poor," two classics that get treated by Clapton and King as such.
Sonically, Riding would be as near spectacular as you'll hear, save for one major fault; seeing that Clapton's name is on the album as a co-producer, I can't help but think that his fingers muddied the pudding, as they did on his last solo album, 1998's syrupy Pilgrim.
The problem isn't the note-perfect studio band that makes the record almost too clean and sharp (thus taking away any rawness or spontaneity that might have been).
