The author’s faith in India is finally tested through the difficult birth of her son towards the end of the book.
What is striking about this book is the author’s openness in pondering over ideas and sharing her revelations, the honesty in dealing with the on-going internal debate, the humility of finding meaning in seemingly difficult situations and the desire to better understand her country.
I would say it is a book I am glad to have read, definitely worth one's time, but it does not hold much incentive for me to read it again.

Each of the three main protagonists in the books studied this semester is described as undergoing evolution from his birth community of dependence, to his independent period of trial and transformation in solitude, and eventually to a somewhat more interdependent community which directly enhances his salvation progress.
The book ends with him continuing his lonely journey and never quite understanding that the short periods of close community he had with the Woodsman and the Judge’s family, are the real union, the real interdependence he seeks.
Further down the road of his pilgrimage, if indeed this is not fictional, we might expect Pilgrim to finally understand that solitude and ceaseless prayer are only stepping stones to union with the people of Christ’s Church here on Earth.

According to the Guinness Book of Records this gathering was then the "greatest recorded number of human beings assembled with a common purpose in history." We are further informed that in 2001 when once again this pilgrimage transpired there were probably more than 70 million attendees.

"Pilgrimage" takes readers on spiritual odyssey
SALT LAKE CITY — A pilgrimage is not a journey where the destination defines the trip.
Instead, it is a journey where the traveler allows the destination to affect an inner change, empowering the experience of place to transcend to the fabric of the soul.
The pilgrimage is always a moving experience, and in the hands of Intermountain Catholic editor Barbara Stinson Lee, her book “Pilgrimage: a journey through the Holy Land with the words of Archbishop George Niederauer” guides the reader through a spiritual examination of where Jesus lived, died, and lived again.

The pilgrimage is not free of contradictions, however, and one of its many little ironies is that the first step toward this state entails a certain amount of very practical preparation ahead of time.
While modern guide books exist for all four routes, by far the most beautiful is the one from Le Puy, in the heart of the Massif Central.
The pilgrimage route in general is lined with the ruins of the past, but nowhere are they more plentiful and fascinating than on this stretch—something that in no way is made any less interesting by the fact that this part of the route runs through La Rioja, the most famous wine-producing region of Spain.
