The Way of a Pilgrim is the English title of an 19th century anonymous Russian work, seemingly autobiographical, likely by an Athonite monk, detailing the narrator's journey across the country while practicing the Jesus Prayer devoutly, with the help of a prayer rope, and studying the Philokalia.
The book as a whole appears to be an allegory to both the life of Jesus, and the struggle of Orthodox Catholicism.

Though virtually unknown in Western Christianity, THE WAY OF A PILGRIM, is one of the most revered classics of Orthodox spirituality.
In the first portion of this book the unnamed pilgrim introduces the reader to hesychasm through use of the "Jesus Prayer" (Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner).
The second portion of the book is more of a theological question and answer session between the pilgrim and his companions.

Yet for both the Way's narrator, and for the reader absorbing his words fifteen decades and half a planet away, the hesychast seems not to lead so much towards monkish withdrawal, as towards compassion, involvement and service towards the world.

Spirituality & Health: The Way of a Pilgrim   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
The Way of a Pilgrim, a classic of Eastern Orthodox spirituality, was first published in Russia in 1881.
This account is divided into four narratives and includes the following incidents: the pilgrim meets his spiritual elders, he learns the Jesus prayer, he encounters a forester, he gets a job as church watchman, he plans for a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, he visits with a pious family, and he departs for the Holy Land.
Although these events are not incredibly dramatic, the inner life of the pilgrim is transformed by the practice of the Jesus prayer and by his readings of the Fathers of the Church in the Philokalia, a great classic of Orthodox teaching on prayer.

There is probably no simpler nor livelier way to understand the richness of Hesychasm and the Jesus prayer than by listening to the remarkable story of an anonymous Russian peasant who wandered through his vast country discovering with growing amazement and inner joy the marvellous fruits of the Jesus prayer.
In The Way of a Pilgrim his story is written down, most probably by a Russian monk whom he met on his journey.
Thus, the pilgrim, who by his confession of sin and unceasing supplication for mercy, recognises his distance from God, finds himself travelling through the world in his most intimate company and inviting others to share in it.

 THE WAY-WORN PILGRIM’S HIDING PLACE
The way to heaven is often spoken of in scripture as a journey, and this by no flowery meadow or purling brook, through no over-arching bowers or verdant shade, but through a wilderness.
From this springs the third character which Jesus sustains to the pilgrim in the wilderness, "As rivers of water in a dry place." How graciously does the blessed Spirit, by this figure, "rivers of water in a dry place," set forth the suitability of the Lord Jesus Christ to travellers in the wilderness.
But when the pilgrim in the wilderness reaches the hiding place from the wind, and the covert from the tempest; when he drinks of the rivers of water, and lies under the shadow of the great rock, he not only hears but hearkens -believes, loves, and obeys.
