Historians at the National Museum have discovered a document which may explain the origins of a box that was found by archaeologists excavating the site of Nelson's pillar.
They say the document refers to the burial of a box with a brass plate in the foundations of the pillar on O'Connell St. The brass plate listed the committee of city merchants who financed the pillar.
What was believed to be a box, measuring about two foot by sixteen inches, is embedded in a block of granite.

 Historic Wavertree, Liverpool - The First National Standard Pillar-box
This box was installed here as long ago as 1865: the date and the maker's name - Cochrane Grove and Co of Dudley - are cast in metal near the base.
It is one of the few surviving examples of the so-called First National Standard type of box, a design that was introduced in 1859 but quickly superseded owing to the fact that rainwater could so easily enter the slot.
The stone pillar was one of a pair which, in the nineteenth century, supported gates facing across to the end of Sandown Lane, while the house was the gatekeeper's lodge.

The boxes include the Ashworth PB1 now in the Collins Barracks outstation of the National Museum of Ireland, a large wall box with SE door (Saorstat Eireann / Irish Free State), a "C" type box with P7T cipher and the small Penfold in green from Bray, Co Wicklow.
Sadly, the fact they have the oldest working pillar box in the world did not inspire them to commemorate the 150th anniversary of its siting with  a matching low value set.

Pillar boxes for airmail letters were introduced in London in 1930.
Originally these were simply a type 'B' box painted blue with an oval sign saying AIR MAIL placed on top, but from 1932 they were produced with a double collection plate, one for collection times and one for air mail postage rates.
During the short reign of Edward VIII in 1936 only a relatively small number letter boxes were made, with the larger type 'A' pillar box being much rarer than than the narrower type 'B'.

I accidentally walked by the Pillar Box while it was aerating in my decanter of choice - a plastic juice pitcher - and almost got woozy just inhaling from 5 feet away.
Now I have to say that my first reaction was not great: there's a lot of oak on the nose, and the finish is pure oak with a serious tannin pucker that leaves you walking around the house with your cheeks sucked in like a fish.
However, on the palate the Pillar Red is spectacular: like putting every Skittle flavor in your mouth at the sime time while gargling consecutive shots of fruit jam.
