Pilot is a member of a race known to us as simply Pilots, who bond with the organic Leviathan spacecraft and become their navigator, companion, and liaison to passengers.

Pilot (Farscape race) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pilots are large creatures, with a multi-limbed upper half (4 arms that grow back slowly when cut off), and a lower half adapted to bond with a Leviathan spacecraft.
Pilots for bonding are chosen from among the population by their Elders, and are carefully screened for maturity and ability.
Pilots possess the ability to multitask several thoughts/tasks at the same time, an ability needed as without their supervision none of the systems needed to substain the crew of the Leviathan will continue working for long though the Leviathan's vital system are not affected by the absence of a Pilot.

Pilot normally is courteous to the crew, but he leaves no room for doubt that his duty is to the Leviathan first and the others second.

Pilot is a rock aboard Moya in more ways than one.
Moya's pregnancy, and the revelations in The Way We Weren't where we learn that Pilot was brought aboard Moya after the death of a predecessor, lead to Pilot developing his own opinion for each situation.
Though Pilot remains patient with the crew at most times, when his worries for Moya overcome his tolerance for the crew, he has been known to lose his cool a little.

Her original pilot-symbiote (a female, some years older than the current Pilot) was murdered by the PK's and Pilot was installed while Moya was under the control collar and sedated.
Actually, Pilot's attitude over the last few cycles was probably at least partly due to physical stress--- the PK's grafted him onto Moya without her consent, tortured her into cooperating, and left Pilot hooked up in a painful artificial connection that never stopped hurting.
Pilot, as well as Aeryn, believes that when D'Argo removed the contraceptive shield (most likely installed by Lieutenant Velorek) in They've Got a Secret that the catalyst he released contained the DNA signature for weapons, impregnating Moya in vitro with designer genes.

Pilot shuts Moyas biologics down - effectively killing her briefly - and the Leviathan-killer missile locks onto the hapless Hokothian ship-turned-decoy instead, which is blown to smithereens.
With some difficulty, Pilot resuscitates Moya and they starburst away, leaving Braca and Grayza to take out their frustrations on the PK minions who built the missile to begin with and whose incompetence clearly botched the mission.
Pilot too is close-mouthed and claims he has no memory of what happened to him and Moya in the wormhole that they were sucked into - but alludes to being "examined" by someone or something.

Pilots facial expressions, eyes, mouth, browridges et al are fully animatronic and are remotely controlled separately by other puppeteers who coordinate their work in part by constantly monitoring video screens simultaneously focused lovingly on every angle of Pilots face and body.
Pilot is also attendeded by a team of artists who replace his entire skin every couple months and keep it looking fresh and fine throughout production.

 Pilot - Farscape Biography
This seemingly selfless act for the benefit of Moya does have a disturbing history.  Pilot wasn’t the original pilot for Moya.  The first was replaced by the current Pilot who was ‘sewn-in’ by Peacekeepers so that they would have a more controllable spaceship.  Moya was, in many ways experimental.
Pilot's upper-torso is an organic outgrowth of the floor of the Command Chamber deep within Moya.
The first Pilot of Moya was murdered by a group of Peacekeeper commandos (Aeryn was one of these) and when the replacement was surgically implanted, he suffered great pain because of the speed at which the operation was carried out and the crudeness of the connections.

The task that you face when writing a pilot is a huge one, especially with a show like Farscape where a whole new universe, new characters and story must be introduced.
Both Rygel and Pilot (although it's not evident with Pilot as much until later episodes) are treated as part of the crew.
This is partly due to the huge range of expressions and mannerisms that the puppets have, but also due to the way the actors do their scenes as if they are acting with another person.

DVD Verdict Review - Farscape: Season 1, Collection 1 (Starburst Edition)
He thinks he'll be able to do so via the Farscape project, which seeks to use a "slingshot" method of propulsion to achieve greater speeds in space.
From this basic setup (which is essentially the pilot episode), Farscape launches its hapless protagonist Crichton into a non-stop series of dangerous, alien, and sometimes slightly wacky experiences.
Like many other contemporary science fiction shows, Farscape has adopted a three-tiered system of storytelling: there's the plot of the individual episode, of course; there are season-long story arcs that weave through multiple episodes but ultimately resolve themselves (to an extent) by the cliffhanger; and then there are long-term arcs that span across seasons.

Commander John Crichton - Farscape Pilot
This he did.  The Moya was freed from her shackles and Crichton told the crew to steer the ship into the local planets’ atmosphere.  He pulled the ‘Farscape trick’ and Moya went whizzing off out of range of the evil Crais and to temporary safety.
Through the adventures that followed in the first and second season, we see Crichton’s temperament and character change as he learns to interact with the crew.  He tends to be the one who doesn’t overreact, and who brings a small amount of sanity to an insane adventure.
He is fascinated by the spaceship and always respectful of Pilot’s abilities.  He doesn’t so much issue instructions to the ship as ask it’s advice which, I guess, is understandable and humane.

Do you ever get the idea that the connection between Pilot and Moya is so complete that in an odd way, Pilot's race doesn't exactly exist on an independant level without the Leviathans (or another sentient being?)...planet bound or not.
He's merely Pilot and his species are all known as Pilot.
Also a good wonder if that is why Pilot doesn't have the normal emotional reactions (or at least shows them as much) as one would expect.
