Pilottown is a small town in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.
In the 19th century it was known as Balize, Louisiana.
Pilottown is built on piers in swampy ground on the banks of the lower Mississippi River, about 85 miles down-river of New Orleans (65 miles by air) and about 10 miles south of Venice, Louisiana.

Louisiana continuously clears the bottom of the Mississippi River to aid navigation, then dumps far offshore sediment that the river carries from tributaries in more than 30 states.
Ancil Taylor, vice president at Bean Dredging, which started the pilot dredging project at Pilottown at the mouth of the Mississippi, argued that using pipelines for redirecting river sediment was cheap and easy and said similar projects had been done around the world for decades.

Originally known as Balize, Louisiana, Pilottown was settled about 100 years ago when traffic on the river shifted from one channel to another, forcing pilots to abandon their station about five miles downriver.
However, the repeated devastation caused by violent storms and hurricanes caused most residents to relocate and today the permanent population of Pilottown is less than 20 people.
Pilottown is not listed in the United States census figures.
