Pin (device) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, the modern pin industry came about more recently in medieval Europe, when scholars needed a method of fastening documents together that could be removed, unlike the common method of using a ribbon or string.
Pins were made by drawing a piece of metal into wire, cutting the wire into lengths, and welding the heads in place.
Pins were sold to businesses as "bank pins," which came in lots of one half pound, and on cards as "toilet pins," meant for use by homemakers.

The plaintext PIN never leaves the unit, never travels over the bank network, isn't even available to the ATM's processor: malicious code running on a fully compromised Windows-based ATM machine might be able to access the cash dispenser and spit out twenties, but in theory it couldn't obtain a customer's unencrypted ATM code.
And the devices must be sufficiently resistant to physical penetration so that opening one up and bugging it would either cause obvious external damage, cost a thief at least $25,000, or require that the crook take the PIN pad home with him for at least 10 hours to carry out the modification.
Before its PIN pads could be certified, Tranax had the change the design of the keycaps to eliminate nooks and crannies in which someone might hide a device capable of intercepting a cardholder's keystrokes.

When using 50-pin (or less) devices, there are several options to make sure that the high (upper) byte of data gets properly terminated so that your Wide SCSI device(s) will perform as designed.
When using only narrow devices with a wide controller care should be taken to terminate the high byte properly, even though with termination set to "Auto" things may apparently work without problems.
