  Sensei's Library: Pincer
There are three common sources of pincers: the 3-4 point, the 4-4 point, the 3-5 point when the approach is at 4-3.
A three-space pincer at a would allow White to extend to b, which is a cramped short extension.
Adamzero: When I pincer my rationale is this: a) by squirming, my opponent will hopefully let me solidify my corner territory in sente b) prevent my opponent from settling, and by chasing him out in the center build territory and/or influence/thickness.

Pincer movement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The pincer movement (double envelopment) is a basic element of military strategy which has been used, to some extent, in nearly every war.
The maneuver is mostly self-explanatory; the flanks of the opponent are attacked simultaneously in a pinching motion after the opponent has advanced towards the center of an army which is responding by moving its outside forces to the enemy's flanks, in order to surround it.
At the same time, a second layer of pincers attacks on the more extreme flanks, so as to prevent any attempts to reinforce the target unit.

The purpose of a pincer attack is to deprive your enemy's stones of such an extension.
A pincer attack, therefore, is an attempt to increase the cost of survival for your opponent, as well as to limit its territorial potential along the edge.
Of the available pincer attacks, a and b are somewhat calm, whereas something like d or e are quite severe, and immediately start a serious fight, and c is perhaps somewhere in the middle.

Finnish tactics in the Winter War
As classic tactical examples to which was referred to, were "the battle of Joutselkä" (in 1555, where a small Finnish force, mainly peasants, attacked a strong Russian army beating it with a pincer attack on it’s flanks) and from foreign battles "Cannae" and "Tannenburg".
The flanking attack differs from the enveloping attack only in the respect that, regardless of the actions along the front, it was projected directly at the the flank of the enemy.
If an attack was to be conducted in the same day, 5 km (depending of course also from the terrain) was the practical limit for a flanking maneuver.

A more common version of the pincer is the "hammer and anvil" attack that often occurs when you are defending a base.
Once they have committed to an attack on the base, sweep in your mobile force to attack them from the rear - hammering them against the anvil of your base defenses.

D&D Miniatures: The Art of Warbands -- Pincer Maneuver
Pincer Maneuver consists of the three basic elements of an armor battalion -- the Chuuls as tanks, the Drider Sorcerer and Drow Wizard as artillery, and the Orc Warriors, Warrior Skeleton, and Troglodyte as infantry.
Against weak ranged attacks, hold back initially so that the Drider and Wizard have a chance to both buff your tanks and take their place as artillery.
Strengths:Pincer Maneuver is strongest against warbands that use creatures with low to moderate attack bonuses, ACs of 20 or less, or that rely on poison, conceal, and/or low AC/high HP creatures vulnerable to Paralyze.
