Alter's work, published posthumously, Chidushey RIM (Hebrew, The New Interpretations of R[abbi] I[tzhak] M[eir], 1875) became one of the basic works on Jewish ritual studied in yeshivas in Poland.
Alter believed a Jew's most important duty was to study the Torah, stressing the joy that Talmudic studies bring.
Alter was succeeded first by his friend, Rabbi Henoch Henich Kohen Levin of Aleksandrow, and beginning in 1870, by his grandson, Yehuda Arie Leyb Alter (1847-1905).

 [No title]
The Torah portion of Pinchas begins with G-d saying to Moshe: "Pinchas...has turned My wrath away from the Jewish people by displaying anger among them on My behalf." Pinchas' conduct involved self-sacrifice, for his deed aroused the wrath of the tribe of Shimon, whose members sought to kill him.
It was this latter type of mesirus nefesh that was displayed by Pinchas, inasmuch as his act of self-sacrifice was not obligatory.
Herein lies the connection between Pinchas and the entrance of the Jewish people into Eretz Yisrael -- a precursor to redemption, which comes about through the essential service of mesirus nefesh, revealing as it does the essence of G-dliness that will be manifest in the times of Moshiach.

The Chassidic Dimension - Volume 2: Pinchas
While Pinchas no doubt deserved a great reward, the priesthood is seemingly not something that can be given as a reward, rather it is a natural state of being.
Pinchas, however, was born earlier and thus was not included in the priesthood.
Since the sin that elicited Pinchas' zealous response was one that consisted of breaching the boundaries between Jews and non-Jews, therefore he was rewarded - measure for measure - with a priesthood that could come about only by a Divine elimination of the natural barriers Pinchas faced in obtaining the priesthood.

He has introduced significant innovations in the curriculum of the educational institutions operated by the Gerrer Chassidim in Israel and abroad, primarily broader knowledge of the expanse of the Talmud, while abolishing the learning of "iyun" (learning a smaller portion of the Talmud in depth).
