RECITAL REVIEW: Big, Strong, Complacent By Michelle Dulak (Pinchas Zukerman, March 4, 2003)
A certain school of opinion holds that Pinchas Zukerman should early on have recognized his true calling as a violist and given up all those comparative frivolities of violin-playing and (latterly) conducting.
Zukerman, though, played the original viola version, where a lot of the most important material is on the middle strings.
More puzzling was Zukerman's slighting of the obvious "big moments," places that cried out for a great climax that he was obviously able to supply if he'd wanted to.

classical music - andante - barely a hint of greatness: pinchas zukerman in recital at the barbican
'The good news is that I'm not dying,' said Pinchas Zukerman, who'd choked on a mint (as he told us), bringing the slow movement of Mozart's E-flat Violin Sonata K. 481 to an abrupt halt.
Zukerman, glued to his music, appeared disengaged — he might, in the first movement, have been playing a practice study, dynamics flat except for the obvious, phrasing or pointing of Bach's subtle harmonic inflections non-existent, and not a hint of projection to the audience.
It's one of the flest works ever written, yet Zukerman walked on and began playing with not a second's pause for reflection, or hint to the audience that maximum concentration and intensity might be required from both player and listener.
