Alcona Township in Alcona County was recognized for their establishment of a park on Lake Huron at the mouth of the Black River.
The township, under the leadership of township supervisor Roger Carlin, applied for and received a grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to create the park in conjunction with the department's upgrading of the public access on the river.
Many residents of the township spent hundreds of hours cleaning and refurbishing the area so now it is a beautiful place to visit.

In 1974, a no consumption advisory for all species of fish in the Pine River from the St. Louis Impoundment to its confluence with the Chippewa River was issued and continues to remain in effect today.
Due to the possibility of direct contact with the sediment, movement of the contaminated sediment into the Ashtabula River and the possibility of uncontrolled releases of hazardous materials from the sediment entering the water supply of the City of Ashtabula, Fields Brook was added to the NPL by USEPA in August, 1983.
The settling ponds were filled with clean soil, the discharge pipe to the river was removed and a twelve foot deep underground clay retaining wall constructed between the ponds and the river.

According to the book “Michigan Place Names,” China was first settled when Samuel Ward and William Gallagher built a dam in a grist mill here in 1825.
In 1832, a man by the name of Amos Wheeler purchased a tract of land on Pine River and built a house near the mouth of Cook Creek.
The town meeting were held in different places, sometimes in one part of the town and sometimes in another, til the addition of a red schoolhouse near Belle River Mills when the town furnished $50 building funds for the privilege of holding elections there.

 Sumner Township
After the 100th year celebration, the Centennial Committee was instrumental in purchasing land between the Pine River, west of Sumner and the race, which ran north along the present Ferris Road.
Sumner Township also purchased the Elm Hall Park in Elm Hall in 2002 and has added some new playground equipment to be enjoyed.
In 1983, the school property was purchased by Sumner Township as their headquarters and is known today as the Sumner Township Community Center on Pine Street in Sumner.
