Mercer County was also known as the Sharon MSA by the U.S. Census Bureau until the 2000 census, when it was appended to the Youngstown-Warren, Ohio MSA.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.40% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 26.10% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 18.10% who were 65 years of age or older.
Mercer County is considered a political bellwether for the state of Pennsylvania since its demographics, urban/rural ratio, and party affiliation closly mirror the state as a whole.

The average annual Pennsylvania age-sex-specific cancer mortality rate for selected cancers from 1988-1992 was applied to the township population to obtain the expected numbers.
Using this method, age-specific mortality rates for the Township (study area) and the County and the State (comparison areas) were applied to a standard population in order to calculate what rates would be expected if both populations had the same age distribution as the standard population.

The northern drift covers the entire county, even on the very summit of Keel ridge in Hickory township 1250` A.T. Bowlders of large size are often found in the drift; granite, gneiss, greenstone from New York or Canada, mixed with limestone, sandstone, shale, pieces of coal, and an abundance of bluish-white clay.
The Mercer iron ore plates of carbonate of iron where they reach a thickness of 1 ½` or 2` have been mined along their outcrops, for the Oregon, Iron City, Clay, Sharpsville, and Mineral Ridge charcoal furnaces.
Under lie the Shenango shales and flagstone 45`; the Shenango sandstone (Sub-Olean flat pebble conglomerate of McKean county) with nodular iron ore and fish remains, 15`; and the Crawford shales, 90` of which are visible in the north-western corner of the county.

 Ross Township- Township History
This left Pine with a strip of land, comprising the districts of Douglas and Jones, six miles wide and sixteen long, from the rivers to the Butler County line.
On the affirmative report of the viewers, the court confirmed the line at the November term of 1809, and the new township was named Ross in honor of James Ross, the eminent attorney of Pittsburgh, just then at the height of his career.
In 1847, the formation of Shaler Township took away about two miles from the eastern side of Ross; so that from that time the township has remained as it is today, except for the formation of the West View Borough in 1905.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania closed the site in 1978 for accepting and disposing of hazardous wastes without an appropriate permit.
Under the Superfund law, U.S. EPA, in consultation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP), has oversight of the cleanup on behalf of all citizens.
After proposing several options and considering community comments, EPA decided that Cooper Industries, Inc. (Cooper), one of the parties responsible for the site's contamination, should build a slurry wall around the landfill area of the site and install a cover made of clay over the landfill area.

The site is of potential health concern because of the potential risk to human health resulting from possible exposure to hazardous substances via ground water, inhalation, and dermal contact at concentrations that may result in adverse health effects.
A number of Hazardous Substance List (HSL) contaminants were found in on-site groundwater and surface and subsurface soils, with the highest levels in areas in which wastes were dumped directly onto the ground or those areas in which containerized wastes leaked.
In addition, persons who used the on-site pond for recreational activities (such as wading and swimming) were likely exposed to contaminants in the surface water and sediments through skin contact and incidental ingestion; and persons who consumed fish caught in the pond were likely exposed to contaminants (primarily mercury) in the fish.
