Wisconsin’s Indians became increasingly dependent on the trade and were inevitably drawn into the imperial wars of the late 1700s, fighting in the French and Indian War (1754–63) and on the side of the British during the American Revolution.
Wisconsin became part of the U.S. in 1783 at the end of the American Revolution, but U.S. control was not effectively established until the building of forts at Green Bay and Prairie du Chien in 1816.

For nearly thirty years after it was platted, Neillsville was a part of the township of Pine Valley, and was governed by the officials of that township.
At the first town meeting of Pine Valley, April 4, 1854, the following officers were elected: Supervisors- James O'Neill, James French and Hugh Wedge; town clerk- B.F. French; justice of the peace--Moses Clark and James Conlin; assessor--James O'Neill; constable--B. French; Superintendent of schools- James O'Neill; overseer of highways--James Conlin, Conrad Dell and Elijah Eaton.
