 Recordins of Pineapple Poll
This was Charles Mackerras's first recording of Pineapple Poll.
This recording includes a suite from Pineapple Poll (eight of the eleven numbers), allowing room for a suite from the ballet The Lady and the Fool, also arranged by Mackerras, from music of Verdi.
Ironically, the Verdi material diminishes one's measure of Mackerras's achievement in Pineapple Poll, as the two pieces sound extremely similar, which suggests that Mackerras is not the master orchestrator many GandS fans have given him credit for.

Gilbert and Sullivan never looked better
The story line of "Poll" is a poem by William Gilbert that precedes the story of "Pinafore," and the music is a mosaic from all the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, arranged originally by Charles Mackerras and rearranged for a smaller orchestra by the G&S Society's music director, Bernard Kwiram.
Byrd is not known for the frivolous, but he could be: "Poll" is a very funny romp, imaginative and fast-moving, and his dancers throw themselves (literally) into it.
The society also designed and made the ballet costumes for "Poll," a specialized job, but in Erickson's day job as costume design area head for Cornish College of the Arts, he has designed for many area theater companies as well as Pacific Northwest Ballet.

The threat of bankruptcy at the box office has been successfully banished for the second time this year by the Royal New Zealand Ballet, thanks to the Company's truly inspired decision to stage Petrouchka.
It has brought new experiences and challenges to the dancers while helping to diminish the company's accumulated deficit, and it has brought in new audiences, especially in Auckland.
It is to be hoped that these new audiences can forgive the Company for pairing Petrouchka with Pinapple Poll, a 1960s adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan themes which today seems vacuous rather than witty or amusing.
