Ping - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The word ping is also frequently used as a verb or noun, where it can refer directly to the round-trip time, the act of running a ping program or measuring the round-trip time.
The usefulness of ping in assisting the "diagnosis" of Internet connectivity issues was impaired from late in 2003, when a number of Internet Service Providers filtered out ICMP Type 8 (echo request) messages at their network boundaries.
This was partly due to the increasing use of ping for target reconnaissance, for example by Internet worms such as Welchia that flood the Internet with ping requests in order to locate new hosts to infect.

 Ping
Ping is implemented using the required ICMP Echo function, documented in RFC 792 that all hosts should implement.
Ping places a unique sequence number on each packet it transmits, and reports which sequence numbers it receives back.
Pinging the loopback interface is a good way to test a machine's basic network configuration, since no packets are physically transmitted.

The Story of the PING Program
My original impetus for writing PING for 4.2a BSD UNIX came from an offhand remark in July 1983 by Dr. Dave Mills while we were attending a DARPA meeting in Norway, in which he described some work that he had done on his "Fuzzball" LSI-11 systems to measure path latency using timed ICMP Echo packets.
On a day like any other, Ping sets off from the boat he calls home with his comically large family in search of "pleasant things to eat." On this particular day, he is accidentally left behind when the boat leaves.
The ping packet is described as a duck, who, with other packets (more ducks), spends a certain period of time on the host machine (the wise-eyed boat).

Limiting the "pings" to the same server does not solve the problem -- abuses of this feature are just as possible (even more likely, actually) using the same server.
Pings are not "bad" for end users -- if anything it would be nice to have one way across all browsers that work.
If the track back ping implementation is limited to a single non-broadcast destination address, then its potential for abuse is dramatically decreased; in fact, it would prove to be a less effective DDoS vector than listing the potential target directly in the HREF tag.
