Pingali Venkayya (August 2, 1876 - July 4, 1963) was the designer of the Indian national flag.
From 1906 to 1911, Pingali spent most of his time researching staple varieties of crops and came up with a study on a special variety called Cambodia Cotton.
However, the flag of the Vande Mataram movement is sometimes thought to be the antecedent of Venkayya's tricolor.

A year earlier in 1916, Pingali Venkayya, from Machilipatnam in present-day Andhra Pradesh tried to devise a common national flag.
When Venkayya sought Mahatma Gandhi's approval for the flag, the Mahatma suggested the incorporation of the "Charkha" or spinning wheel on the flag, symbolising "the embodiment of India and the redemption of all its ills".
Pingali Venkayya came up with a flag with the charkha on a red and green background.

Born on August 2, 1876 to Hanumantharayudu and Venkataratnamma at Bhatlapennumaru in the Divi taluk in Krishna district, Pingali was a precocious child.
Pingali?s flag was made of two colours, red and green representing the two major communities of the country.
Pingali Venkayya, the illustrious visionary, the designer of the national flag died, unhonoured on July 4, 1963, in conditions of poverty.

The flag was designed by a freedom fighter called Pingali Venkayya and was officially adopted by India's constituent assembly on July 22, 1947.
When Pingali Venkayya designed the flag, he intended that the saffron colour symbolize Hindus, the green Muslims and the intervening white peace between the two communities.
Due to Mahatma Gandhi's objections that there were many other religions in India, it was decided that the green would symbolize prosperity, the white purity and the saffron courage.

Few of us associate the name of Pingali Venkayya with anything else other than as being the original designer of the national flag.
Finally, this man went back to his roots at Masulipatnam and focused his energies on developing the National School (at Masulipatnam),where he taught his students basic military training, horse riding,history and knowledge of agriculture, soil, crops and its relation to nature.
It was at this session that this frail middle aged gentleman, Pingali,approached Gandhi with the flag he designed for India.

NARAYANA REDDY: National Flag is the symbol of honour and dignity of an Independent country.  Tricolour flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya in 1921.  Ghandhji approved it during his visit to Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh
August, 1878, Venkayya was a great patriot.  Venkayya was a person of immense talents also.  His book “A National Flag for India” was published in 1916.  He had a profound knowledge of Japanese, Sanskrit, Urdu, Telugu and English languages. 
Gandhiji appreciated the efforts of Venkayya in designing a flag for IndiaVenkayya served the country through his efforts in several fields like agriculture, education, metallurgy and geology.

On the contrary, the sad part about our National Flag, where there is no such a controversy as above; never got the pubilicity not even the familiarity about the designer of it.
Later it was substituted with 'aSOka dharma cakra' with 24 radii indicating the 24 hpurs of the day.
It is truly sad and strange that 'Sree pingaLi venkayya' is not as popularly known as the author of the controversial National Anthem.

It was a long time back I read in telugu magazine (Andhra Prabha I think) about the life story of Sri Pingali Venkiah garu.
A similar situation is there now, the great soul Sri Nanda, ex-prime minister who fought corruption sincerely.

The Indian flag went through all kinds of metamorphosis after this.
However, the key architect was a young freedom fighter from the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, Pingali Venkayya who was given the responsibility of designing the prestigious flag by none other than Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation.
His flag after considerable review was accepted by the All India Congress and subsequently the country adopted it in 1947.
