Jeff Altman made a comment recently, blaming the whole fiasco on the Pink Lady chicks, I think as much, if not more, of the blame should be on him.
Pink Lady actually possessed some charm, and Mei was pretty hot, but their level of performance is usually associated with 7th grade talent shows.
Pink Lady was popular in their native country and the Kroffts should have done "Pink Lady and Jeff" exclusively in Japan and include Jeff Altman as well.

But the company that owned the Pink Lady act was quite insistent that the name of the show be Pink Lady and no Jeff.
Finally, someone high up at NBC — it may have been Fred Silverman — went to the lawyers for the Pink Lady company and said, "We must have Jeff Altman's name in the title of the show." The lawyers came back and said, okay, fine.
Everyone finally gave in and the title became Pink Lady, with the "and Jeff" used unofficially and with occasional threats of legal action.

How it ever made it to air is completely beyond me. Pink Lady are not even that talented as singers (even in their native Japan, their vogue as disco stars was brief), and they seem incapable of lip-syncing to their phonetically-learned song lyrics.
Jeff Altman wasn't as unfunny as people say, I thought they guy had a few funny sketches, the problem was, awful writing.

Every episode would always end with Mie and Kei say something to Jeff you couldn't understand, then they would remove their kimonos revealing the swimsuits they were wearing under it and would drag him fully dressed into the hot tub.
It was one of the few funny things I can remember, but they did that every week and it got old fast.
