In the original Pink Panther movie, the main focus was on David Niven's role as Sir Charles Lytton, who is the infamous jewel thief "the Phantom", and his plan to steal the Pink Panther from its owner.

The show was continued in the 2nd season under the title "The Pink Panther Meets the Ant and the Aardvark", which replaced the "Inspector" segment with "The Ant and the Aardvark", and had new animated bumps made for the duo.
"Pink Panther", "The Inspector", and "The Ant and the Aardvark" shorts and bumpers was entirely rerunned in seasons three to seven under the title "The New Pink Panther Show".

The Pink Panther Show rocked the first few years it was on...Then, in one of the first signs NBC would eventually give up the ghost on cartoons, The Lame Sorry Ritts Puppets were added as in studio hosts.
The "Pink Panther"- the original movie (and "Shot in the Dark"), the cartoon character, and the theme music- are all great and never jumped on their own.
I know that the Pink Panther cartoons were made primarily for theatrical exhibition up until 1970 or so, when the focus became more on production for television (although I can recall still seeing these in the cinemas occasionally through the seventies), and the quality of the earlier cartoons reflects this.

That title would have been equally apropos of the current incarnation, simply titled "The Pink Panther," which finally arrives after being bounced around the release schedule numerous times, in part because of Sony's purchase of MGM/UA.
