Shears - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A pair of shears is any scissors-type tool of relatively large size.
Like scissors, shears combine slightly offset jaws to cut material through physical shear, and combine this with levers to apply a considerable shear force.
Shears are usually intended for cutting much heavier material than scissors though.

Fiskars 9 in. Pinking Shears 94457097 Review at Epinions.com
In case you aren’t familiar with pinking shears, the scissor blades are notched and mesh together to cut fabric in a crisp zigzag pattern.
In case you are curious, pinking shears in the style we are familiar with were invented in 1893 by Louise Austin in Whatcom, Washington.
If pinking shears are used to cut out pattern pieces, it is more difficult to match the edges of fabric for accurate sewing.

Pinking Shears and Ribbons - Wehrmacht-Awards.com Militaria Forums
For those who didn't have to take home economics in middle school like I did, pinking shears are scissors that cut in a distinct zig-zag pattern and help prevent raveling or fraying.
Pinking shears were invented in the U.S in 1893 and my personal suspicion is that you won't find them used on German ribbons until the 1950s.
'pinked backing you'll see slight irregularities and the angle of the teeth is different than your normal shears.

When we were cleaning out my mother-in-law's house after she died last month we came across a pinker that once belonged to her mother-in-law (had to be, she's the only one that ever sewed in that family and she lived with them for 20 years).
We did not cut out with pinking shears to make sure that the edges were straight.
You should never never try to cut out patterns with pinking shears, as they are not accurate enough and you won't be able to see your markings.

Crafty Ones Message Boards - Sewing Tip using Pinking Shears!
Okay....for all you doll makers....when you are making your doll bodies....instead of using regular scissors use "pinking shears" to cut out your body parts.
Or cut out body parts with your pinking shears before sewing.
I absolutely love this tip as it makes it not only so much easier to turn and stuff your bodies but you eliminate having to clip curves and what/not and your edges and curves will be nice and smooth and it also helps prevent fraying or popped seams.

Fray check is basically a clear flexible glue, and you can feel it through the seams in more lightweight fabrics.
