Census of Marine Life Gulf of Maine Area Program
Pinniped specimens displayed in the “12,000 Years of Maine History” exhibit at the Maine State Museum in Augusta show that marine mammal specimens can be used in this way to shed light on changes in the Gulf of Maine.
These specimens represent a remarkable range of pinniped species including some, such as grey and harbor seals, which are common in the Gulf of Maine today and others, such as walrus and bearded seal, rarely if ever currently seen in the Gulf.
The pinniped specimens in the Maine State Museum clearly show a progression from colder water species (walrus and bearded seals) to warmer water species (harbor and grey seals) over the last 14,000 years.

Pinnipeds (seals and sea lions) have long been recognized as predators of fish and viewed as competitors with humans for coastal marine fishery resources.
Pinnipeds on the Oregon coast were killed for bounty from the 1920Õs to the late 1960Õs, and were killed in the Columbia River by a seal hunter paid from commercial fish ticket revenues.
Pinniped food habits studies have documented consumption of nearly every fish species occurring in their range, including salmonids when they are available as prey.

Pinnipeds have four flippers - one pair in front, and one pair in back.
Although most of their lives are spent in the water, pinnipeds, unlike whales and dolphins, are also dependent on land.
Pinnipeds may come ashore periodically to rest and bask in the sun, and at least once each year, during their breeding season, most species congregate on beaches or sea ice to give birth and breed.

Of the six pinniped species found in the sanctuary, five are common: the California sea lion, the Steller sea lion, the Northern fur seal, the Northern elephant seal, and the Pacific harbor seal.
Pinniped populations can be affected by human-induced disturbance, manufactured toxins (e.g., organochlorines), and fisheries conflicts.

The dangerous situation was not only a consequence of the unlimited catch of seals during a long period, but it was also influenced by the strong chemical pollution of the animals environment, especially in the late twentieth century.
Besides, the escalating of intensity of fishery also negatively influenced the condition of the Pinniped populations in the Baltic sea.
Not many of them noticed the extinction of dolphins, the sharp decrease in the Pinniped number, the fact that the Baltic has become one of the most polluted seas on Earth within a short period of time.

Pinniped - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pinnipeds appear to have diverged from their bear-like ancestors during the Latest Oligocene.
It is believed to have been a good swimmer, but to have been able to move on land as well as in water, more like an otter than like modern pinnipeds.
DNA evidence suggests that all modern pinnipeds descend from a common ancestor that lived sometime in the earliest Miocene, possibly an Enaliarctos-like mammal.

Reports of pinniped interactions with salmonid fisheries have increased in recent years, as have reports of scarring of salmonids attributed to pinnipeds.
This has raised concern that predation on salmonids by pinnipeds could be increasing and causing significant negative impacts on threatened, endangered, or severely depleted salmonid populations.

NMFS fails to report that the US Marine Mammal Protection Act already includes provisions for lethal removal of pinnipeds which threaten public safety, and which are individually identifiable as having significant adverse impacts on the decline or recovery of salmonid stocks.
"The recommendations for killing seals and sea lions (pinnipeds) are ecologically, ethically, socially, and scientifically indefensible and irresponsible and should be avoided at all costs.
There are no data to support the contention that pinnipeds are responsible for the decline of fisheries and none to indicate that the recommendations in this proposal will achieve the stated goal of enhancing depleted fish populations", says Dr.

NOAA Fisheries--Impacts of Pinnipeds on Salmonids in Estuaries
A pilot program was conducted in the Alsea, Rogue and Umpqua Rivers in Oregon in the fall of 1997 when pinnipeds (Pacific harbor seals and California sea lions) were known to occur in the mouths of these rivers during the migration of coho salmon.
Methodology included surface foraging observations and pinniped scat collection in the Alsea and Rogue Rivers, scat collection in the Umpqua River, and pinniped scarring data collection at a hatchery in the Alsea River system.
The data collected during the fall season of 1997 were determined to not be adequate for an assessment of pinniped impacts on salmon.
