Pinocytosis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In cellular biology, pinocytosis ("cell-drinking") is one of three forms of endocytosis, a process in which small particles are taken in by a cell by splitting into smaller particles.
Pinocytosis is primarily used for the absorption of extracellular fluids (ECF), and in contrast to phagocytosis, generates very small vesicles.
Unlike receptor-mediated endocytosis, pinocytosis is unspecific in the substances that it transports.

Mediation of pinocytosis in cultured arterial smooth muscle and endothelial cells by platelet-derived growth factor -- ...
Pinocytosis was measured in monkey aortic smooth muscle cells (SMC), bovine aortic endothelial cells, and Swiss 3T3 cells in culture as cellular uptake of [U-(14)C]sucrose and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) from the tissue culture medium.
In SMC, enhancement of the rate of pinocytosis occurred 4-6 h after exposure to WBS or PF, and the rate was up to twofold higher than the rate in medium containing PDS.
These findings suggest that the rate of pinocytosis maybe be coupled in some fashion to growth regulation, which may be mediated in part by specific growth factors, such as that derived from the thrombocyte.

Endocytosis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Uptake by pinocytosis often involves areas of the cell where the plasma membrane is surrounded by a fuzzy coat.
It reduces the amount of pinocytosis required to take up a set concentration of substrate and it also reduces the amount of irrelevant material internalised (this can be a problem, after all you don’t want to swell up like a balloon!).
Constitutive pinocytosis is usually studied using a number of small, readily available macromolecules.

Similarly, an acute increase in pressure to 200mmHg caused a 78% increase in apical pinocytosis (p<0.05) and a non-significant 42% increase basolaterally.
The increase in basolateral pinocytosis during ischemia suggests enhanced efflux mechanisms that may be transporting substances from brain to blood.
In addition, since the enhanced pinocytosis after an increase in pressure occurred in isolated arteries in vitro without the influence of metabolic or neuronal factors, these findings demonstrate that elevated intravascular pressure is a primary stimulus for pinocytosis in cerebral endothelial cells.

Re: What purpose does Pinocytosis serve?
The other purpose of pinocytosis is so important and is less obvious.
Some of this membrane is synthesized and stored inside the cell but some of it comes from the cell surface and is internalized by the constant pinocytosis taking place.
The constant pinocytosis means that you have a lot of membrane coming in to recycle fast to the surface for secretion.

Phagocytosis denotes cell eating or uptake of large particles (roughly 1 micrometer and greater), and is mainly associated with the function of the macrophages, also called "professional phagocytes." Pinocytosis, or cell drinking, denotes cellular uptake of soluble material (macromolecules and colloids smaller than 100 nm).
When we use these terms today, most of us are unaware of the fact that the concept of pinocytosis was introduced as late as in 1931 [6].
The type of pinocytosis that prevails in SEC is receptor-mediated endocytosis via clathrin coated pits.

In your notes draw figures showing endocytosis and write a paragraph comparing three types of endocytosis: pinocytosis, phagocytosis, receptor-mediated endocytosis.
During pinocytosis the unit membrane simply folds inward forming small vesicles containing extracellular fluid which may merge together forming a water vacuole.
Water vacuoles store water soluble molecules and provide a means for the cell to control its turgidity (tightness of a cell due to the taking up of water).
