Prior to this, mounds of this type were thought to be confined to the later Mississippian Period (post-A.D. Approximately 33 feet tall with a ramp on one side, Ozier Mound was constructed in at least six stages.
Finally, the primary mound, the walkway, and the circular platform were covered with several distinctive layers of fill dirt, bringing the northern Twin Mound to a height of approximately 23 feet.
Pinson Mounds has been designated a National Historic Landmark [1964] and is managed by the State of Tennessee as an archaeological park.

Pinson Mounds State Park suddenly saw a creative boom Sept. 30–Oct. 2 when 60 Union students took time out of their weekend to attend the annual art department retreat.
It was a cool moment, because we each told the defining moments of our lives, and we got to talk about it and put it into the sculpture.
The sculptures were group projects to build altars in the park, which were completed during the course of the day and then taken down before the students had dinner.

In 1999, the MTSU Archaeological Field School was held at Pinson Mounds -- the largest Middle Woodland ceremonial center in North America.
While a large portion of the Pinson Mounds site is managed as Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park, other portions of the site are managed by the Tennessee Division of Forestry as a tree nursery (an operation which preceded the creation of the state park unit).
