The Wildson's Snipe on the Isles of Scilly
The face pattern recalled Pintail Snipe, with the supercilium bulging in front of the eye and considerably broader than the eye-stripe at the base of the bill, and the legs were duller, more greyish-green, than the cleaner green of the accompanying Common Snipe.
We returned to Lower Moors and found all the snipe in stretching and preening mode, and it was not long before the Wilson's Snipe had spread its tail and raised its wing, revealing the important features of the pattern on the axillanes and underwing-coverts and the narrow white trailing edge to the secondaries.

The Pintail Snipe, Gallinago stenura is a small stocky wader.
It is the commonest migrant snipe in southern India, Sri Lanka and much of Southeast Asia.
Male Pintail Snipes often display in a group, with a loud repetitive tcheka song which has a crescendo of fizzing and buzzing sounds, and also whistling noises produced in flight by the pin-like outer tail feathers which give this species its English name.

The Jack Snipe is an extremely difficult bird to see, partly because they are not very common but mostly because they are so well-camouflaged they will often sit unnoticed and let you walk past them.
In that brief glimpse you must judge their size and shape (smaller than a Snipe with a shorter bill, shorter tail and shorter wings) and their plumage with more strikingly golden stripes but a minimal pale trailing edge to the wing.
If you know where a Jack Snipe is sitting you should get exceptional views, good enough to see the short bill and tail, the longer more contrasting golden back stripes and the different head pattern with an extra fl stripe across the eyebrow and with fl stripes meeting at the ear coverts.

All forms were listed as full species by Holdaway et al (2001); Worthy et al (2002) noted diagnosable differences between aucklandica, meinertzhagenae, and the as yet unnamed Campbell Island Snipe, but retained them as a subspecies group pending further studies.
According to Barker et al (2005), these birds appear to be most closely related to the Auckland Island and Antipodes Island Snipes, but sufficiently distinct that they are likely to prove to be at least an endemic subspecies.
