Chinese input methods for computers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Keyboard input methods can be classified in three main types: by encoding, by pronunciation, and by structure of the characters.
In addition, the methods which require the user to select a character from a menu generally have sophisticated methods for guessing which characters the user intends based on context.
As with the English language, all these methods suffer from high error rates, though the error rates are acceptable to many users.

Input method editor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An input method editor (IME) is a program or operating system component that allows computer users to enter complex characters and symbols (such as Japanese, Chinese, Tibetan and Korean characters), using a standard Western keyboard.
The term input method generally refers to a particular way to use the keyboard to input a particular language, for example the Cangjie method, the pinyin method, or the use of dead keys.
On the other hand, the term input method editor generally refers to the actual program that allows an input method to be used (for example MS New Pinyin, PRIME, or SCIM), or the actual editing area that allows the user to do the input.

Pinyin (拼音 pīnyīn) literally means "join together sounds" (a less literal translation being "phoneticize", "spell" or "transcription") in Chinese and usually refers to Hanyu pinyin (漢語拼音, literal meaning: "Han language pinyin"), which is a system of romanization (phonetic notation and transliteration to roman script) for Mandarin Chinese used in the People's Republic of China.
The Wubi method is based on the structure of characters rather than their pronunciation, making it possible to input unfamiliar characters, as well as not being too closely linked to any particular Chinese dialect.
Unlike pinyin, Cangjie is based on the morphological aspect of the characters wherein each basic, graphical unit is represented by a letter from the Roman alphabet.

 Writing Chinese
The Pinyin method of writing Chinese uses a modified Roman alphabet to phonetically spell the proper pronunciation of Chinese characters.
In Pinyin it is "Zhongguo." Certain words are kept in their familiar form, even by the most dedicated users of the Pinyin system.
Pinyin not only makes it possible to deduce the Chinese pronunciation from the way a word is spelled, but also makes it possible to produce dictionaries and Chinese language textbooks.

In this invention, the Enhanced HLV Chinese Pinyin Input method uses certain letters out of the 26 letters of the English alphabet to represent the four tones of the Pinyin as well as the radical codes of Chinese characters.
In general, the input method is as follows: Input the consonants of the Chinese characters using the corresponding keys ; then input the vowels of the Chinese characters ; after that, key in the letters representing the tones ; Lastly, key in the letters which represent the radicals.
Therefore, in comparison with other input methods that use numeric keys or special symbol keys to indicate the tones and radicals of Chinese characters, this method is entirely different and makes inputs much faster.

Under any input method, the user types a string of letters, the computer looks up the conversion dictionary specified by the input method and presents the user with a list of choices/candidate characters to which the string is mapped.
Secondly, under some transliteration input methods, certain combinations of Pinyin letters are replaced with single letters and the number of key strokes is significantly reduced.
This is particularly useful for input methods that incorporate words and phrases into their conversion dictionaries because the choice menu can be long and you have to 'scroll down' the menu to select the right candidate (usually with certain keys but sometimes with the mouse).

There are various ways of typing Chinese into a word processor: Cangjie, BoPoMoFo, and of course, Pinyin, to mention but a few.
But I've never seen a GR method, which is a pity because GR tonal spelling makes for far fewer homonyms than the commonly used toneless-Pinyin method, for example, and this relative scarcity of homonyms may well make a GR IME more efficient than a Pinyin IME.
There are no alternative input methods in GRIME to use when, for example, the pronunciation of a word is not known.
