The pion, being the lightest meson, can be used to predict the maximum range of the strong interaction.
The connection between pions and the strong force was proposed by Hideki Yukawa.
We now know that the pion is a meson, a composite particle, and the current view is that the strong interaction is an interaction between quarks, but the Yukawa theory stimulated a major advance in the understanding of the strong interaction.

Pion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pions are the lightest mesons and play an important role in explaining low-energy properties of the strong nuclear force.
In the modern understanding of the strong interaction (quantum chromodynamics), pions are considered to be the pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons of spontaneously broken chiral symmetry.
Pion currents thus couple to the axial vector current and pions participate in the chiral anomaly.

Discovery of the Pion --- 1947   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
While 1997 is being widely celebrated as the hundredth anniversary of the discovery of the electron by J.J. Thomson at Cambridge, the 50th anniversary of the 1947 discoveries of the pion by Cecil Powell at Bristol and 'V-particles' by George Rochester and Clifford Butler of Patrick Blackett's group in Manchester draw less attention.
The discovery of the pion and its subsequent decay highlighted the role of the muon (discovered by Anderson and Neddermeyer in 1936), while the Vs were the first examples of 'strange' particles containing a third type of quark.
It was, therefore, postulated that the latter represented the decay of positively-charged pions and the former the nuclear capture of negatively-charged pions.

pion. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
The existence of the pion was predicted in 1935 by Hideki Yukawa, who theorized that it was responsible for the force of the strong interactions holding the atomic nucleus together.
The neutral pion is its own antiparticle, while the negative pion is the antiparticle of the positive pion.
It is now known that each pion (and, more generally, each meson) consists of a quark bound to an antiquark.

 One Pion Exchange Potential.
In the extreme low energy limit, we would expect that the long-range part of the potential between nucleons is dominated by the exchange of the lightest strongly interacting particle (as we are requiring all interactions are local), which we know to be the pion.
In these models, which have many free parameters fit to reproduce nucleon-nucleon scattering, the singular part of the pion potential is "renormalized away" by the fitting of the heavy meson parameters.
The central part of the potential induced by pion exchange (preserves angular momentum by definition) depends on the spin and isospin channel.
