Pioneer Zephyr - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pioneer Zephyr is a diesel-powered railroad trainset (a set of railroad cars permanently coupled together, actually an articulated railcar with Jacobs Bogies) built by the Budd Company in 1934 for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CBandQ), commonly known by the shorter name of Burlington.
Since the Pioneer Zephyr was built of stainless steel, which is not as recyclable as aluminum, the train was spared from the metal recycling drives of World War II.
The Pioneer Zephyr's last revenue run was a trip from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Kansas City, Missouri, (along the train's regular revenue route) that then continued to Chicago on March 20, 1960.

The Zephyrs had their start, spawning a number of look-a-likes, on April 7, 1934 when the CBandQ’s Zephyr 9900 was finished in Philadelphia.
The Zephyr 9900 had three cars- a power car that included space for mail; a car that had space for baggage, a buffet-grill and 20 seats; and a car with 40 seats and a 12-seat observation lounge at the rear of the car.
It is reported that the new name was prompted by her success- the addition of new Zephyrs in "the Q’s" stable.

McCook Daily Gazette: Story : Column by Walt Sehnert
Budd's new train was christened "The Burlington Zephyr," later known as the "Pioneer Zephyr." Budd came up with the name after reading "The Canterbury Tales", which told of pilgrims setting out on a journey.
During the trip, the Pioneer averaged 77 mph, with a top speed of 112.5 mph (just short of the then land speed record of 115 mph.) This was about half the time that regular passenger trains were making the Denver/ Chicago trip in 1934.
The year after the Zephyr was in put into service passenger traffic increased 103 percent on the CB&Q. By 1955, when the Pioneer Zephyr was taken out of service, it had operated over 3 million miles.

The original Burlington Zephyr had successfully raised patronage to overflow levels on the Kansas City to Lincoln route, expectations were high that the Twins would do the same for the highly competitive, revenue-challenged route between Chicago and the Twin Cities.
The increases in passenger levels on the three Zephyr routes made an impression on management, for example, in July and August of 1935, over 5000 passengers could not be accommodated on the Zephyrs.
To publicize the new Denver Zephyrs, and to start building a larger passenger base, the Burlington reassigned the MTZ and the 9900 to be the Advanced Denver Zephyrs, one running each direction between Chicago and Denver on a 16-hour schedule daily.
