Piotrkow Trybunalski is a town in central Poland, about 16 miles (26 km) south of Lodz.
Piotrkow was occupied by the Germans on September 5, 1939, four days after the outbreak of World War II.
Some 2,000 Jews of Piotrkow managed to escape during the initial days of the occupation, but the number of Jews in the town swelled as refugees from neighboring towns poured in.

Obviously the people in Piotrkow took that as a direct command and so they attached the cross as a provisional measure to the monument, for their annual church dance festival.
