Alan Dean Foster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flinx's constant companion since childhood is a minidrag named Pip, a flying, empathic snake capable of spitting a highly corrosive and violently neurotoxic venom.
In the area of fantasy, his best-known work is the Spellsinger series, in which a young musician is summoned into a world populated by furry creatures where his music allows him to do real magic whose effects depends on the lyrics of the popular songs he sings (although with somewhat unpredictable results).
Many of these revolve around the character of Philip Lynx ("Flinx"), an empathic young man who must save the universe.

Sliding Scales (Pip and Flinx, book 10) by Alan Dean Foster
Flinx and Pip, that daring duo of man and "minidrag" (a flying snake), take a break—or try to—from fighting the forces of evil in Foster's surprisingly dark ninth entry (after 2003's Flinx's Folly) in an SF series usually considered light on substance but heavy on fun.

With only his Alespinian minidrag Pip for company, Flinx leads a rather nomadic existence, traveling in his advanced starship which was a gift from the mysterious and technologically advanced viru-ujurians.
Empathic telepath Philip Lynx, known as Flinx to his friends, is still on the run from the authorities who would love to get their hands on his talented, engineered brain.
Flinx is searching for answers about his unique gifts, which give him excruciating headaches.

 Analog -- The Reference Library
His empathic talent appeared, and one night a sense of lonely hunger drew him from his bed to an alley garbage heap, where he found the minidrag, Pip.
The rest of that novel explained that before Flinx reached his auction block, he had escaped from the Meliorare Society, a group of mad scientists who strove to use genetic engineering to improve the human species.
Love grew between them, and Flinx grew boldly streetwise.

[ELFWOOD] SF&F Art / Nico Danell / 'What?'
Enough people have suggested winged snake or feathered serpent, so I'll offer 'minidrag', as in Pip the minidrag in several novels by Alan Dean Foster -- or perhaps 'minidrake', just to vary things a bit.
I should read the books to see what you mean.
