  Piper PA-23
hen Piper purchased the assets of the Stinson Division of Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation in 1948, one of the proposed designs was the Twin Stinson that was to be a modification of the popular Stinson 108 Voyager/Station-Wagon.
The experimental prototype, the Model 23-1, was a four-place, steel tube-and-fabric, low-wing airplane with a fixed tricycle landing gear and a twin tail.
Piper upgraded the Apache in 1960 with 250 hp Lycoming engines, new flight instrumentation, a swept vertical fin that increased performance, and a new name, the Aztec.

Plane & Pilot Magazine | The Piper Geronimo N4411P
In contrast to the very modern, slick, swept, quarter-century-newer Piper Seminole, the original Piper Apache had manifested itself with the aerodynamics of a pet rock and all the charisma of a speed bump.
As a result, Piper built just over 2,000 of the bulbous PA-23 Apache 150s as well as 160s between 1953 and 1961, and the airplane proved to be one of the most popular multi-trainers of its day, flying in between a pair of Lycoming O-320s.
Since the original Piper Apache 150 was far from the so-called fast lane—the airplane was working hard to produce 145 knots—a typical Piper Apache Geronimo conversion delivers more like 160 to 165 knots on a smooth day at optimum altitude on an ISA day with everything trimmed, all the vents closed and perfect rig.

 Piper Apache Pilot Report
Mention "Apache" around pilots and most of them immediately think of a 3,500 pound sweet potato that has a couple of little Lycomings snuggled up next to it with a side-walk-sized wing tying the mass of bulges together.
It has gotten to the point that a stock Apache like 80P is almost a rarity because the cost of the airframes has gotten so low (under $10,000 for a 150 hp dog) that folks are really doing the modification number on them.
Since Apaches were the real "in" thing to fly in the late '50s, every one who owned one loaded it up with the best radio gear available.

Piper’s distributors, used to retailing Cubs and Tri-Pacers, were horrified at the price of the Apache when first deliveries were made in February 1954.
The Apache also motivated WT Piper, well into his seventies, to get a twin conversion and after a few hours instruction, soloed the Apache on July 21, 1954 — it was his first and last solo flight in a twin — he gave up flying altogether three years later.

The Apache was built in the 1950's and the panel reflects this.
The Apache was built as a general use light twin that could do multiengine training at low cost (an article from the 1970's says that $35 per hour was a high rate for an Apache rental, my, how times change) and the FS version reflects that perfectly.
Landing the Apache is not hard at all, but it is somewhat difficult to get slowed down from a steep descent from altitude to get within gear/flap limiting speeds.

 Airliners.net: Piper PA-23 Apache/Aztec
The origins of the PA-23 Apache (one of the first widely available GA twins and Piper's first "Indian") and the larger and more powerful Aztec lie in the early postwar Twin Stinson design.
Piper acquired the assets of Consolidated Vultee's Stinson Aircraft division in 1948, and inherited a design study for a modern four place light twin.
Piper left the design dormant for a few years until 1952 when it built a prototype aircraft, cn 23-01, based on the Stinson design.

Piper Aircraft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Piper Aircraft, Inc., is a manufacturer of general aviation aircraft, located in Vero Beach, Florida.
Piper, often called the "Henry Ford of Aviation", firmly believed that a simple-to-operate low-cost private airplane would flourish, even in the darkest depths of the Great Depression.
The PA-23 Apache was one of the first aircraft associated with the term "air taxi" although it has largely been superseded in that role by faster and more spacious designs from the competitive Beechcraft Corporation.

SumpThis: Fuel Contamination in General Aviation Aircraft
In view of the number of accidents involving engine stoppage in Apache airplanes due to water or undetermined reasons, the potential for entrapping water in the fuel cells of these airplanes is particularly disturbing.
On May 24, 1971, the Piper Aircraft Corporation issued Service Bulletin No. 340, "Fuel Cell Vent/Drain Lines Inspection," applicable to both Apache and Aztec airplanes, to prevent leakage of water into the fuel filler compartments and fuel cells, and to assure that the vent/drain hole inside the fuel filler compartment is not blocked or cracked.
If the Piper Apache/Aztec fuel cell tests disclose that unsafe quantities of water can be entrapped, issue airworthiness directive containing appropriate remedial action that must be taken to purge the fuel cells of such water or to prevent the water from reaching the engine.

Piper Aztec - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Piper PA-23, named Apache and later Aztec, was the first twin-engine aircraft built by Piper Aircraft.
In 1958, the Apache 160 was produced by upgrading the engines to 160 hp (119 kW), and 816 were built before being superseded by the Apache 235, which went to 235 hp (175 kW) engines and swept tail surfaces (119 built).
Part of the drag inherent to the Piper Aztec series of aircraft was due to the fact it utilized the same wing design (albeit with substantially different dimensions and construction) to the Piper Cub series of aircraft.
