Malibu Mirage - The Ultimate Piston Single
Piper's presence in Florida eventually led to a manufacturing facility in Vero Beach, where the Cherokee (PA-28 series) was designed and produced.
With the Malibu and Mirage back on track, and a revival of general aviation in the mid-'90s becoming evident, Piper was positioned for a comeback.
Just as we reviewed the history of Piper as a means of understanding the genealogy of the PA-46, we now need to delve into the details of the Malibu, and compare them to the newer Mirage, in order to reveal the relative merits of the two designs.

The New Piper Aircraft, Inc. - News Article
The New Piper Aircraft, Inc., today introduced special 20th anniversary models of the company’s flagship aircraft, the Malibu Mirage and the Malibu Meridian, to celebrate the significant innovations these models have brought to New Piper as well as the general aviation industry as a whole.
When the Malibu was first designed, it was not intended to be an enhanced version of an existing model, but rather a totally new airplane.
The Malibu was the first pressurized, single-engine, six-place aircraft to provide volume production of a clamshell entrance in the rear for passengers and seating equal in size and comfort to the cockpit — qualities previously found only in private jets.

Plane & Pilot Magazine | The Malibu Turns 21
The new model party for the 1984 Piper Malibu was a major event in Vero Beach, Fla. It was, after all, the first all-new general-aviation airplane in at least a decade.
The Malibu was a revolutionary machine for Piper, the company’s first attempt to field a pressurized single in direct competition with Cessna’s successful P210N.
Another Malibu advantage was the airplane’s large cabin, as generous as a Navajo Chieftain’s in width and height.

The piston powered Malibus may be converted to turboprop with the Jetprop DLX conversion.
The aircraft is, according to the Piper Company, the first pressurized cabin class piston powered aircraft with only one engine.
In 1997, Piper announced its intention to market a turboprop-powered version of the Malibu, and flew a prototype the following year powered by a Pratt and Whitney Canada PT6A-42A of 500 shp (373 kW).

 Airliners.net: Piper PA-46 Malibu Meridian
The Malibu Meridian is the first major aircraft program from New Piper Aircraft Inc and is a high performance turboprop development of the popular Malibu Mirage.
Major sections of the Meridian's fuselage are common with the Malibu's but the turboprop features a number of significant changes, including a stainless steel firewall, chord lengthening wing root gloves which increase wing area to ensure a relatively low stall speed, increased area horizontal tail and rudder, and increased fuel capacity.
A rival turboprop Malibu is the Jetprop DLX which is a conversion of piston-engined PA-46s.

Philip Greenspun’s Weblog » Piper Malibu Mirage Transition Training in Vero Beach, Florida   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Vero Beach is the home of New Piper Aircraft, manufacturer of the Malibu, and is located on the SE Atlantic coast of Florida, halfway between Cape Canaveral and Miami/Ft. Lauderdale.
Basically the Malibu does everything that a jet-powered airplane does without the fuel consumption of a jet or the high initial cost of a jet (the same airframe is available with a jet engine driving a propeller; it is called a Piper Meridian and is about $700,000 more than the Malibu).
The Malibu is a lot cheaper to operate than a pressurized twin and I have no use for the larger cabin of a Cessna 340 or 400-series plane, not to mention the fact that those old Cessnas are getting pretty old because they’ve been out of production for 20 years or more.

Since 1994 New Piper has made a number of minor improvements to the Malibu Mirage including to the brakes, autopilot and air-conditioning.

Piper Malibu - Airplane Crash Research Site
While the Continental Continuous Flow Fuel Injection System is used in a number of other Continental engines, the Malibu version of the fuel pump is unique in that it incorporates an Aneroid Pressure Chamber to sense changes in induction pressure as they occur in the pressure side of the engine intake system.
The consensus among Malibu pilots who have contacted us is that the 2000 hour TBO for the Continental TSIO520BE series engine may be acceptable.
However the repair histories shared with us by pilots and mechanics familiar with the Malibu indicate that a 5 year or 1000 hour service level might be more appropriate for the fuel pump and the aneroid chamber.

The FAA has not determined the cause of the accident and is still investigating the six similar mishaps, but says it has found evidence of "gross" excess strain on the wings of the aircraft that crashed.
