  Timeless TriPacer
Piper’s first effort after World War II for four seat airplane started out with what were essentially short Piper Cub wings attached to a stubby fuselage with snug seating for four.
With the Pacer, Piper had a good solid cross country airplane, that looked good and flew well, but there was still one area that could be improved in many pilot’s minds, so Piper took the final plunge by removing the tailwheel, rearranging the main gear, and adding a nose wheel, to create the Tri-Pacer.
The Piper Pacer is a nice plane to fly; the visibility is limited but normal for an older aircraft, and the controls, while not perfectly balanced, work easily, and get the job done.

Piper Tripacer PA 22 Flying Milkstool;from Fiddlers Green
Piper, which had been building the very successful tandem-seat Cub series, decided to add another low-cost item in 1948 and 1949, the fabric-winged PA15 Vagabonds, side-by-side two-seaters.
The much stubbler Pacer wing (about threequarters the total area of the Cub wing) did allow the Pacer to fly about 20 mph faster than the comparable Cub.
In 1951 Piper introduced its Piper PA-22 Tri-Pacer, basically a version of the PA-20 Pacer with tricycle landing gear that incorporated a steerable nosewheel.

Piper then decided to take things a step farther for those who wanted to upgrade to the next level of light aircraft and so developed the Pacer.
From Jan 1950 to Sep 1954 the PA20 Pacer was sold, with flaps, 125/135hp Lycomings, control wheels and a higher level of mechanical sophistication and "luxury" than the predecessors.
They had all the goodies of the Pacer, plus the tricycle gear, and ultimately more power, features, higher service ceiling, etc. In late 1960 the four-place series was put to rest with the introduction of the PA28 Cherokee, designed by Fred Weick of Ercoupe fame.

Piper PA-20 Pacer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The PA-20 Pacer is a four-place, high-wing light aircraft that was built by Piper Aircraft in the post-World War II period.
The Pacer was originally designed as a tailwheel aircraft and thus had somewhat limited forward visibility on the ground and more demanding ground-handling characteristics.
The Pacer, Tri-Pacer, Colt and their variants are supported by a very active aircraft type club, The Shortwing Piper Club.

The Pacer and Tri-Pacer designs were Piper's volume selling four seaters from 1949 through to the introduction of the Comanche and Cherokee in the early 1960s, while the Colt was a two seat training derivative of the Tri-Pacer.
The original tail dragger PA-20 Pacer was introduced in 1949 alongside the two seat PA-18 Super Cub, and the prototype was powered by a 85kW (115hp) Lycoming O-235-C1 engine.
Piper introduced the Colt to its lineup in late 1960, and the type remained in production for just over two years until the two seat Cherokee could be introduced.
