The surrounding area in Pipestone County is also rich in history, and the neighboring town of Jasper stands today as a reminder that Pipestone did not possess a monopoly on quarrying and railroad transportation.
The town of Pipestone was largely built with rock quarried from the large deposits of Sioux quartzite in the county.
Pipestone's first school was a 10 by 15 foot wooden building, opening in the summer of 1878 with six students taught by Florence Bennett.

Pipestone National Monument is not a monument in the conventional sense, not a towering statue to pose next to for vacation snapshots.
Pipestone Creek and Lake Hiawatha border the northern edge, and to the west lies a thin line of upturned earth and rock.
With the coming of settlers, Pipestone City was platted, and by 1881 a large quartzite building-stone quarry was opened by a white settler.

Pipestone City Hall, one of the most architecturally distinctive buildings in the district, is today the Pipestone County Museum.
Pipestone City Hall also illustrates the Richardsonian Romanesque style; the Neoclassical style is represented in the two buildings constructed for the First National Bank at 101 W. Main Street and 113 W. Main Street; the Italianate style can be seen at the Syndicate Block.
Pipestone National Monument, created by an act of Congress in 1937, is an area of ethnological, archeological and historical significance that preserves the pipestone quarries in a natural prairie setting.

Michigan's fruit farms, many of which are located in the famed "fruit belt" that runs along the eastern coast of Lake Michigan, are national leaders in cherry, apple and blueberry production.
The first peach tree in western Michigan was probably planted by William Burnett, who established a trading post on the west bank of the St. Joseph River a mile upstream from Lake Michigan in the 1780s.
The towns of southwestern Michigan continued growing after 1906, but the peach producer of yesteryear has taken his place in history with the fur trader, the copper miner and the lumber baron.

In the 1863 Atlas of Michigan, listed as "A fractional township and small post village of Berrien county, on the St. Joseph river, between South Bend, Ind., and Niles, Mich. The township borders on the State of Indiana, and is distant 190 miles south-west from Detroit.
The township was organized in 1856, and is about five miles square; the soil is generally a clay loam, very rich, and well suited to grass and grain with gently rolling surface--the south-east portion hilly.
Pear, apple, and quince trees flourish and bear heavy crops of fruit, which is attributed to the proximity of lake Michigan and the consequent mildness of the climate, preventing the early spring frosts from injuring the trees.

 8/27 - Sea lamprey program under way near Sodus
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has in Pipestone Creek, and a field crew is expected to address the issue starting today by introducing lampricides to a roughly 15-mile segment of the creek in the Sodus Township area of Berrien County.
An assessment team from the Fish and Wildlife Service discovered the larvae in Pipestone Creek, a tributary of the St. Joseph River that empties into Lake Michigan, some 30 years ago, said Ellie Koon, a treatment supervisor and a member of the field crew that arrived at the creek this year.
To be on the safe side, anyone with access to Pipestone Creek, between the St. Joseph River and a point just east of the Pipestone Creek Golf Course near Bailey and Naomi roads, is advised to use discretion and minimize unnecessary exposure to the chemicals.

The first Official Michigan Highway Map without the concurrent M-82/M-120 routing from west of Fremont to Hesperia is issued in 1979, implying the M-82 designation was scaled back in the 1978 season.
MDOT had identified a westerly bypass of Schoolcraft in the late-1990s, but a Prairie Ronde Township trustee objected to the route through his township and the taking of farmland, so MDOT has gone back to the drawing board to look at other alternatives.
In addition, on May 20, Division Ave from Michigan st northerly to Plainfield Ave at the cnr of Coldbrook St is determined as a state trunkline.

Scholarships, each in the amount of $1,000, are available to assist elected officials from MTA-member townships that may not be in a financial position to provide the funding necessary for completion of the Township Governance Academy.
Payments-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILT) made annually by the state to townships, counties, cities and villages for property owned by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is being delayed because the state is claiming a shortfall in funding.
