  Pipidae
The definition of the name Pipidae is problematic because of the relationships of Mesozoic and Tertiary taxa to living pipids (Báez, 1981).
She used two synapomorphies for Pipidae (including the aforementioned taxa): the absence of a quadratojugal and the absence of mentomeckelian bones.
By ignoring the fossils, Cannatella and Trueb (1988a) produced a diagnosis for the family that was misleading.

Abstract: A parasitological survey of aquatic hymenochirine toads (Pipidae) from tropical Africa indicated the occurrence of camallanid larvae in these hosts is a regular ecological phenomenon.
Regardless of its significance for transmission, the survival ability of lan al stages in non-definitive host vertebrates might have predisposed camallanid lineages to evolutionary host changes and contributed to the wide dispersal of the family.

 Evolutionary Morphology of Vertebrates
Comparative morphological study of the feeding apparatus in aquatic, suction feeding frogs (Pipidae)
While most tetrapods are characterized by a feeding-apparatus that allows them to feed in a terrestrial environment, tetrapod ancestors relied on some sort of suction feeding to feed in the aquatic environment they lived in.
The subject of this thesis will focus on musculoskeletal specialisations that enable Xenopus laevis and Silurana tropicalis (two well known members of the Pipidae) to feed under water and at the surface.
