Cuevas won the WBA welterweight title from Angel Espada via KO in 1976 and made 10 successful defenses against Billy Backus, Pete Ranzany, Harold Volbrecht, Clyde Gray, and Scott Clark, along with two rematches with Espada.
Cuevas finally lost his title in 1980 to the up-and-coming hometown hero Thomas Hearns in Detroit.
Cuevas is the owner of a restaurant and a security company in Mexico City.

Although Hearns was frequently overshadowed by the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvelous Marvin Hagler during his career, he became a superstar in his own right, eventually posting a 59-4-1 (46) record, winning seven world championships in six weight classes during his 22 year pro career.
During his career he beat such notables as Jose 'Pipino' Cuevas, Roberto Duran, Virgil Hill,,, and Wilfredo Benitez.
Hearns won his first championship by KO'ing the legendary Pipino Cuevas in the second round of their fight in 1980.

The career of Cuevas like many Mexican fighters started early, and at the age of 14 was on the loosing end of 4 of his first 11 fights that went the distance......he knocked the other 7 men out.
This set Cuevas back to the gym's with a vengeance and WBA champion Angel Espadas mistakenly thought Cuevas would be a easy defense after his loss to Price.
The end for Cuevas would be swift and come in the form of another big puncher in Thomas Hearns.

After wrestling with the matter of Pipino's induction I was able to come to terms with it.
He was Carlos Palomino and he won the crown with a spectacular KO of John H. Stracey.
