Timur felt that none of his sons were capable of handling the job (Jahangir and 'Umar Shaikh had died, Miran Shah suffered from mental difficulties, and Shah Rukh was judged too pious to rule).
He was unable to assume command in Samarkand and was murdered by his vizier in 1407.
