  Glossary
Pir Sultan Abdal is also a legendary Sufi poet, like Yunus Emre, with the same direct and clear language, the same richness of imagination, and the same high level sensitivity.
Yunus Emre and Pir Sultan Abdal both reflected the social, cultural and religious life of their people; they were both humanists, and wrote about love, peace, death and God.
However, Pir Sultan's verses are not as peaceful, because they voice the life of the Anatolian people of the 16th century, suffering under the Ottoman rule.

Pir Sultan was an ideal symbol of the Alevi-left synthesis, bringing to light the unresolved issues of both: persecution; location on the periphery; and desire for inclusion, completion, and representation.
Pir Sultan was alive when the sense of mehdi-ism or messianism was still strong (Basgoz, 1986: 204), and the Safavid shahs still made claims to their Kızılbaş-Alevi followers that they were such.
Therefore, embedded in the mythical image of Pir Sultan is a chain of heroic „others“, who were oppressed for their profane views; valued for their provocative convictions; revered as concrete manifestations of a sacred essence; and imbued with expectation, sacrifice, and the desire for rectification.

It portrays him as inextricably tied to Pir Sultan Abdal in a manner that is almost mehdi-like.
He took the saz in hand and struck its strings, singing from Pir Sultan, Virani, Kul Himmet...“ (ibid.).
This quote also demonstrates the transformation of saz from romantic song-tool to weapon and transmitter of revolutionary longing, but, more than this, it reveals the strong association and compatibility between these two images, between established customs and their continual reinterpretation to beget practices that will eventually be understood as „tradition“.

Pir Sultan Abdal translation sought, and poetry mailing lists
I want to do a Scots translation of the Pir Sultan Abdal poem at .
It's related to a ballad found in Scottish tradition, "The Twa Magicians" in Child's collection - Child's notes reference other versions from southern Europe, but he missed Pir Sultan's, which is by far the most intellectually sophisticated.
The basic theme is known from myths in classical antiquity and is presumably even older than that.
