Piraeus, or Peiraeus (Modern Greek: Πειραιάς Peiraiás or Pireás, Ancient Greek / Katharevousa: Πειραιεύς Pireéfs) is a city in the prefecture of Attica, Greece, located south of Athens.
Piraeus remains a major shipping and industrial centre, and is the terminus for Line 1 (the "green line"), the electric train service now incorporated into the Athens Metro.
In very early antiquity Piraeus was a rocky island (the settlement of Mounichia--the present Kastella) connected to the mainland by a low-lying stretch of land that was flooded with sea water most of the year and was used as a salt field whenever it dried up.

Visually, the city of Piraeus is almost the same as Athens; the border between the two cities is imperceptible within the endless maze of streets and houses.
Piraeus has three harbors: Great Harbor, where the bulk of Greece's maritime trade and the bulk of the Aegean ferry traffic arrives and departs; and Zea Marina and Mikrolimano, two smaller harbors where private yachts dock and a small amount of hydrofoil traffic takes passengers to the Saronic Islands.
Swinging back to its former glory, Piraeus was again Greece's principal port at the beginning of the 20th century, but in 1923 had to deal with the influx of 100,000 immigrants from Turkey.

 Piraeus : Introduction | Frommers.com
Piraeus has been the port of Athens since antiquity, and is still where you catch most island boats and cruise ships.
As in antiquity, today's Piraeus has the seamier side of a sailors' port of call and the color and bustle of an active harbor -- both aspects, somewhat sanitized, were portrayed in the film that made Melina Mercouri an international star, Never on Sunday.
Piraeus also has a sprawling street market just off the main harbor, where you can buy produce brought each day on island boats, including bread baked that morning on distant islands.
