Salon Technology | The Silicon Valley myth with a life of its own   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
There's a scene in "Pirates of Silicon Valley" in which a cigarette-smoking Hewlett-Packard executive turns up his nose at Steve Wozniak (as played by Joey Slotnick) and his shabby-looking little Apple I prototype.
The executives at HP had their heads screwed on OK. It isn't that the portrayal is untrue -- HP did blow it -- but, like most historical dramas, "Pirates of Silicon Valley" is a movie concerned more with vivid, colorful myths than with the subtleties of truth.
Silicon Valley's power cults At Intel, Oracle and Apple, you can't escape the grip of a fearless leader -- or a paranoid one.

Muddy Waters (review of "Pirates of Silicon Valley") | Linux Journal
"Pirates of Silicon Valley", which talks about the rise of young Bill Gates of Microsoft and Stephen Jobs of Apple, reminded me of movies in the exposé genre, movies which seem to say, "look how outrageous these famous people are!" Flashy, sensational portrayals are the norm here, making the celebrities shown seem completely unbalanced.
The story itself was based on the book Fire in the Valley: The Making of the Personal Computer by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swain, which consisted of interviews with "the people who made PCs a reality".
For the most part, the movie was a retelling or narration of the rise and rise of Silicon Valley's most famous sons, Gates and Jobs.

The rise, and fall, and rise, and fall, and rise again of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs is a fascinating tale, filled with plenty of brilliance, and skullduggery.
Pirates of Silicon Valley attempts to bring that to the big screen and is marginally succesful, painting neither man in a particularly beautiful nor horrible light.

Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999) is an unauthorized made-for-television docudrama written and directed by Martyn Burke.
Gates, Jobs, and Wozniak would drop out of college (Jobs was actually a Reed College student for a short term but this is not documented in the film; Wozniak would later return to UC Berkeley) in order to take part in the growing personal computer revolution.
Pirates of Silicon Valley was nominated for five Emmy Awards.

At times, it seems like a stereoscopic biopic, with Gates crony Steve Ballmer (John DiMaggio) and Wozniak (Joey Slotnick) alternating voiceover narratives of their respective "early days" in Cambridge and Berkeley.
And that, really, is when Pirates of Silicon Valley is most interesting, albeit sometimes confusing.
This film was based on the 1984 book Fire in the Valley by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine, which chronicled the hits and misses and happy accidents that led to the development of the computer that has become such an integral part of our culture.

"Pirates of Silicon Valley" starts off in the late 1960s, when Gates, played by Anthony Michael Hall (a veteran nerd actor and an inspired casting choice), and Jobs, played by "ER" veteran Noah Wyle (who bears a striking resemblance to Jobs), are toiling away at their respective colleges.
The movie tracks their parallel growth and growing enmity -- from garage to glass-covered campus, in the case of Apple, and from a grungy hotel room to immense wealth, in the case of Microsoft -- as Jobs builds his revolutionary empire and Gates, in turn, pilfers his genius.

I watched the TV show on the history of microcomputers called, "The Pirates of Silicon Valley".
As usual, Hollywood (or where ever it was produced) took lots of liberties with dialog, and how things happened to try to tell a story and make it more entertaining.
If you have no interest in the historical accuracy, then it was probably fun and entertaining -- but even then it seemed a little too "jumpy" to me, having little real flow.

The Pirates of Silicon Valley - Christian Business
The Pirates of Silicon Valley is, at its essence, about entrepreneurship.
Working out of their garage and scrapping together some money for lunch everyday, two Steves (Steve Jobs, played by ER’s Noah Wyle, and Steve Wozniak) begin work on an invention that most people and bankers, as the movie shifts from one ironic scene to the next, eschew.
The Pirates of Silicon Valley, however, provides a nice modern-day illustration of that truth.

"Pirates of Silicon Valley" kept reminding me of another long poem by Wilmot -- not his best, but memorable -- to which I once referred in a discussion of nonverbal online communication:

“Pirates Of Silicon Valley” is director Martyn Burke’s adaptation of Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine’s book, “Fire in the Valley: The Making of The Personal Computer.” “ER”’s Noah Wyle occasionally goes overboard playing Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, sometimes seeming to channel a cleaner, more messianic Jim Morrison.
To judge by the “Pirates” part of the title, and the mounting monopoly litigation facing Microsoft during filming and in the years since, an average viewer might expect this dramatization to be a morality play with Bill Gates in Satan’s seat.
Still, there’s enough humor to counterpoint the drama, and the script supplies a heaping helping of anecdotes that have become Silicon Valley legends (see Woz’s site at www.woz.org for expositions and a few corrections).

The title is a pun referencing both the buccaneering style Jobs celebrated at Apple, and the idea of unethically 'pirating' the computer developments of other engineers.
The film's main point is that both Apple and Microsoft gained their key functionality, the image-based screen display of a computer system (GUI) and the 'mouse' pointing device, by 'pirating' the ideas.

Overall, "Pirates" is content to take the commonly known facts about Gates, Jobs and the rest, and throw in a few anecdotes here and there for color.
Such tidbits include Gates' arrest for speeding, back when he was just some punk kid; the incident in which he crashed a steam shovel into Paul Allen's new car; the topic of Jobs' daughter, whose existence he denied for years; and Jobs' abusive and tyrannical management style.

As a sort of amateur historian of the early days of the personal computing revolution, I was looking forward to TNT's "Pirates of Silicon Valley," which debuted last weekend.
But unlike many critics, including such industry luminaries as John Dvorak and New York Times' Stephen Manes, who complain of historical inaccuracies and literary license, I found the two-hour treatment to be reasonably accurate given the limitations of time and the medium.
The biggest problem with "Pirates of Silicon Valley" is its fixation on Steve Jobs, who is both praised and demonized in this TV movie.
