  The Pirc Defense
The Pirc Defense looks a lot like the Philidor defense, but it is very different.
The point of the Pirc Defense is to open up both bishops and attack the center with knights, not pawns.
The reason that this is not a new section is that it is exactly the same as the Pirc Defense.

Pirc Defence- Chesspedia, the free chess encyclopedia
The Pirc Defence, sometimes known as the Ufimtsev Defence, is a chess opening characterised by Black responding to 1.
Move order is not so critical in the Pirc as in other openings, but a typical sequence might be 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6, with Black fianchettoing his bishop on g7 next move.
A distinction is sometimes drawn between the Pirc and lines where Black delays the development of his knight to f6 — this is known as the Modern or Robatsch Defence.

"The Pirc Defense" by GM Alexander Chernin and Jan R. Cartier, 1997 Hays Publishing, Flexicover, English Algebraic Notation, 167pp., $17.95 The publisher's blurb of this new opening book declares that the Pirc is "not for the faint-hearted...
If you dream of demolishing White's psyche along with his center, then there is no better opening choice than the Pirc." Well, that may be pushing it a bit, but the bottom line is that the book does deliver in an acceptable, comprehensive way.
For as one makes it through this fairly competent treatment of one of Black's sharpest defenses, one should be entitled to know who is making analytical suggestions and evaluations.

This modern, active defense found a place in Fischer's repertoire when he was but 12 years old at the 1955 U.S. Junior Championship.
Fischer's Grunfeld defenses from this period are among his most famous games, including the "Game of the Century" vs. D.
The story of Fischer's adoption of the Sicilian Defense is essentially a study in the Najdorf variation, for this has been virtually the only variation of the Sicilian he has ever played.

That's the point of the defense, fl favorably tries to emphasize the disadvantages of white's position, potentially overexposed pawns accidentally being one such.
In my opinion the Pirc is ONLY for advanced players in that most lines give fl only the barest play against white's center and initiative, and to suspiciously defend a lot of the main lines requires a great deal of skill.
Pirc for lower rated players I obviously think is that unless you blunder badly there's no real sneaky traps for white, and you won't get similarly mated in the first 10 or 12 moves...

There is also, at the end of each section, a discussion of the Pirc versus Modern (1...g6) move orders, and the authors assess the advantages and disadvantages of each in the particular lines covered in the chapter.
On the other hand, there is a repertoire that doesn’t provide enough coverage to arm a player for all the situations he might face as a Pirc proponent, both in the key lines the repertoire recommends and in some of the material it glosses over.
If you are seeking to become a Pirc player, you will learn some good stuff from the introductory chapters, but I would caution you that you may need some other Pirc books to be properly armed.

The French Defense has a proven reputation for adaptibility and soundness, and is attractive to the Black player who seeks a complex strategic fight in unbalanced positions, with healthy counterplay and many chances to decide sharp battles in his favor!
Black´s defensive resources are based on a sound strategic foundation, and White must be alert at all times and willing to play forcefully and incisively in order to try to prove his advantage in positions with chances for both sides.

However, in the author’s defense, Alburt and Chernin took the easy way out by writing a repertoire book that leaves out many important lines.
While it is good to have this later theory, I often get the feeling that the author hasn’t made a full attempt to assimilate it into a cogent set of observations – just put out the variations and let the reader sort through them.
While I understand that page counts have to be respected in opening works, this lack of coverage reduces its value for many players who start with the Modern move order but often transpose to the Pirc when the situation suits them.

The biggest problem for Black in the Pirc is not any specific line per se, but that White's position is *extremely* easy to play in general, so the onus to study theory is more on Black than White.
In this aspect i think it is possible to study less in the Sicilian than the Pirc, and still get a playable position out of the opening.

Of course, the authors' stylistic approach may not be to everyone's taste: in fact, Nunn and McNab provide a fairly extreme example for this column's ongoing 'ideas-versus-variations' debate, since they devote almost no space at all to general ideas, nor do they expressly lay out the typical strategic and tactical motifs of the Pirc Defense.
But the move is missing entirely from The Ultimate Pirc; and since this is a book which claims to serve both Black and White, I believe that it should have been considered.
