		The City of Pireas, while practically speaking an extension of Athens only 5 kilometres away, is still markedly different in character.
		Cruise ships that currently use the Pireas port east side will move to nearby Keratsini and/or the port of Lavrio, but the study has yet to be finalized.
		In Pireas' case, that means getting a new sewage, water and fire-fighting system installed - the only port in the Mediterranean to have one.

		Historically Pireas (2) has been inhabited since the ancient times and it is connected with the history of Athens, selected as its haven, since 493 B.C., by the politician and hero of the persian wars Themistocles.
		The city of Pireas was destroyed by the roman Syllas in 86 B.C. The history of new Pireas starts, essentially, in 1829, with the installation of its first inhabitants, and officially in 1835 with the foundation of the municipality in a period that the population of the region is not more than 300 habitants.
		Pireas a city with the front in the sea has the possibilities to recover and become a sustainable and attractive city for its inhabitants and the tourists, at the moment passengers only, which take the boats for the islands.

		Lots of people visit the islands for a weekend, either city people who want a break, or people who work or study in the city but have families in the islands.
		The main operators for Santorini are Blue Star Ferries (www.bluestarferries.com) who have the BLUE STAR PAROS leaving at 1530 and getting to Pireas at 2255, and Hellenic Seaways (www.hellenicseaways.gr) who have the fast catamaran HIGHSPEED 3 leaving on Sunday at 1815 and reaching Pireas at 2355.
