Danish brewer Carlsberg AS said Monday that Carlsberg Breweries has raised its stake in Bulgarian brewer Shumensko Pivo AD to 89 percent through the acquisition of a further 29.6 percent of the company's share capital, AFP reported.
Carlsberg Breweries, which is 60 percent owned by Carlsberg AS, plans on merging Shumensko brewery with Pirinsko Pivo in order to strengthen its positions on the local market.
Carlsberg Breweries holds a 98 percent stake in Pirinsko Pivo.

Danish company Carlsberg, owner of Shumensko Pivo and Pirinsko Pivo, is planning to invest between three and five million leva in the two breweries this year.
Last week, in a series of newspaper interviews, Gruncharov said that Shumensko Pivo and Pirinsko Pivo are to be united in a single company.
There are about 670 people currently employed by Shumensko Pivo and Pirinsko Pivo but it was expected that some would be laid off, Gruncharov said.

The move, announced last Friday, follows on the heels of another recent Bulgarian acquisition after Carlsberg in late June purchased nearly 60 per cent of Shoumensko Pivo.
The price of the transaction was not disclosed, but expectations were that Carlsberg will pay between six and nine leva a share, the price range at which the Blagoevgrad-based company's shares were floated on the Bulgarian Stock Exchange before its delisting in May, 2000.
In early Pirinsko Pivo decided to go public again and in mid-July, the Treasury Securities Commission authorised its registration.
